Jono Bolton Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere to get a proper celluloid pickguard made? I find a lot of the "cheaper" printed ones look a bit flat. Quote
wateroftyne Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Assuming you're talking about classic 60/70s Fender tort... you're out of luck. Spitfire do the closest repros I've seen, and the most expensive, but (IMO) they're not quite there. 2 Quote
dannybuoy Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 The ones WD Music sell are pretty good, definitely not printed on as you can see the colour differences through the thickness of the material. Quote
Geek99 Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 (edited) For a jazz ? Red or brown I have actual celluloid available, poured, not printed as you can see from the depth of the top layer I just rubbed some brown shoe polish on the white Black white layer and it looks fairly convincing as “old”. You can’t make proper old style celluloid now as the chemical they used are noxious (I understand) Edited October 13, 2020 by Geek99 1 Quote

I had one made for a P Bass by the Bass Doc many moons ago. Quote
Steve Browning Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 I recall the Bass Doc used the 4 ply blank material from WD Music. He made about 3 for me and they were all corkers. Tort plate reproductions are my bette noir in that many of them look awful (and the Fender ones are almost the worst). Quote
bigjohn Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 I've been looking at these recently... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203136977806?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28 Quote

Jonse Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) I got a guard from this account. Look like similar guards but maybe slightly cheaper? https://ebay.co.uk/usr/fenderparts I bought from there as he had a range of 57/58 style 10 hole precision guards. Good stuff and fit perfectly. Really good people and they've done some outstanding work for me. I've seen some of the tort celluloid material and it's very good indeed - probably better than some that I bought from Simms. I'd trust this outfit and it's got me thinking about some replacements for brass backplates - a way of reducing weight Quote

Good people, price and turnaround time. 2 Quote
