Alberto Rigoni Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 Dear colleagues, what's in your opinion the most growly, punchy and full of mids Fender Precision bass, possibly with maple fingerboard? thanks and cheers! Alberto Quote
OliverBlackman Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 Lee sklars’ Franken P. Could just be him but it does sound good in his videos. Quote

hooky_lowdown Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 Any 70s Fender P will growl, then your choice of strings will decide how much. 😀 Quote
wateroftyne Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 There's no magic combination - any P will growl differently (or maybe not at all) to another... 4 Quote
Lozz196 Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) The Classic 50s I had was a very aggressive, growly Precision. Similarly when I played another Basschatters Classic 50s it was the same. Big thick chunky maple neck on it. Edited October 18, 2020 by Lozz196 Quote

Beedster Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 So that’s the 50s and 70s boxes ticked, 60s, 80s and 90s anyone 3 Quote

Cosmo Valdemar Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 I had a Precision with a maple cap neck once - seriously growly and trebly. Just like Entwistle's Frankenstein. The neck was from a Roger Waters Precision, as far as I know the only Fender bass with such a neck. Quote
gjones Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 I bought a set of Dunlop Superbright roundwounds to put on one of my Precisions. It now sounds a lot more aggressive than my other Precisions. Quote
Bigguy2017 Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 Strings and pickup height are the factors here. My Precision really growls with Rotosound roundwounds. Quote
Misdee Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 The most growly Fender P depends on who is playing it and with what intent, rather than the bass itself. John Wetton, for example, played an alder/rosewood early 60's P with roundwounds ( probably Rotosound, still the best string ever for that kind of sound) brilliantly and never has there been such a growly and menacing sound. An ash/maple 70's P bass could sound much more mellow, depending on who was playing it and what they were trying to achieve. Quote
Dood Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 Then add even a pinch of distortion in the upper mids to all of the above for some extra bite ;o) Quote

Absolutely - in general slightly more mids with be perceived as the pickup is brought closer to the strings. Round wound strings are a thumbs up from me too. Quote
Dood Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 (edited) Listen to the beginning of "Got The Time" by Anthrax. By using a lil drive, Frank's bass tone doesn't just growl, it tears your face off Edited October 19, 2020 by Dood 2 Quote
skej21 Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 A jazz bass with the tone rolled off a little! (Joking!! *runs for cover*) Quote
such Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 Something like this? I heard a few of this guy's builds (got one on order too) and they tend to sound as if a rottweiler, a concrete mixer and a Royal Enfield struggling up a hill had a baby. Quote

Cuzzie Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 If you are stuck to a fender model, then stick a Creamery 58 P pick up in it - it will growl more than my dog at the postie. I did a self build from a Mighty Mite body, Stuck a nice chunky Allparts maple neck, did a relic paint job of my choice (one of my mates hates it, but hates all gold!) and popped the creamery pick up in. Its just the ticket! 3 Quote
