greghagger Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 I made this video lesson as I notice a lot of my bass students trying to use the ‘one finger per fret rule’ for all playing situations. This could be holding you back and be preventing you from playing with accuracy. Find out more in the lesson and use the exercises I provide to improve your technique. 3 1 Quote
bazzbass Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 some good points made I strengthened my pinky very early on and use it instead of my ring finger a lot, especially over the first six frets as shown in the vid. Just makes sense. 1 Quote
TheLowDown Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) I always use one finger per fret and it works for me, but the rule is that you should use the best method for different types of playing. Simandl feels very alien to me now. Edited December 26, 2020 by TheLowDown 1 Quote
chris_b Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 We should all be capable of playing both fingering styles and to know which is appropriate, ie to avoid stretching. So Simandl low on the neck and Saimadl or 1FPF further up the neck. 4 Quote

I tend to use Simandel lower down, 1FPF above the 5th fret and sometimes bigger stretches above the 12th fret. But I could easily play 1FPF over the whole board if needed. I let the song dictate it mainly. 1 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 I have big hands and am generally comfy with IFPF everywhere - but presently trying to figure out how to hold down second fret while using pinky to get a harmonic at 6... OW! 1 Quote
