Powering multiple pedals from 1 adaptor

Hi All, have recently started using a few more pedals and am spending a fortune on batteries and running out of power sockets for the adaptors. So, was wondering about getting some sort of 'spider' power supply to give juice to everything from one power socket. Firstly, am i right in thinking these things exist? havent been able to find anything through basschat's search function but i assume this kind of thing is built into pedalboards? secondly while most of my pedals are standard 9v i do have a DHA valve distortion that runs off 12v.

So, can everything be run off 1 supply? What about if different brands of pedal require different voltages or polarity?

Sorry, I have no ideas how all this works so would really appreciate any advice / links you can send!

Thanks!
Russ

You can’t run the DHA off the 9V supply. I’d use what Silent Fly has suggested but I’d make sure your power supply can produce enough power – depending on what you’re powering you might get away with as little as 200mA but if you’re using any digital effects then aim for a power supply that can produce at least 1A.

Power supply: http://www.johnnyshredfreak.com/store/inde...73ea31e76b28f25

Daisy chain: http://www.johnnyshredfreak.com/store/inde...465d3a2945bb171

Right angled daisy chain (more £ but saves space): http://www.ekmpowershop8.com/ekmps/shops/m...-chain-39-p.asp

The DHA will run at 9v but will sound better at 12v. Diago can custom make you a 9-12v adaptor to run on the daisy chain, and I know of someone who has done this successfully with the above power supply and a DHA pedal (he's on here, can't remember who exactly!).

That Johnnyshreadfreak supply gives 1500mA which doesn't leave room for too many other pedals once you've put the DHA on there. Most ODs/fuzzes etc don't use much current, it's the digital ones that can eat over 200mA and of course tube pedals. The Diago unit supplies 3000mA but is more expensive, then there's the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power which is megabucks!

Something like this will do - http://www.hartnollguitars.co.uk/products.asp?id=2218

I agree with the above - don't go for anything with less than 1000mA output, and you will need a seperate supply for the DHA.

As for polarity etc, most go the Boss way with a centre negative 5.5mm x 2.1mm male barrel plug, some have 3.5mm Mini-Jack and some have centre positive.

If you need a converter link to match your pedal to supply, send a PM to the forum member OBBM - he'll make up whatever you want.

Thanks so much for the help everyone...
let me see if im understanding this correctly.

One way would be to simply use my existing 9v Boss power supply with a daisy chain to power my boss pedal tuner, Boss OC3, Akai headrush, Behringer Bass Chorus etc etc etc. The use my seperate 12v supply to power the DHA?

What would happen if i used the 12v supply and daisy chain to power everything? Would it be BAD??? Unless I get Diago or someone to build me a custom 9v and 12v daisy chain yeah?

And with regard to 1000ma and all that jazz.... (I dont have the foggiest what this even means!) but i need to find out how many ma's each of my pedals draw, total them up, check my supply can deliver that much and that the daisy chain i buy can cope too?

God it's all very confusing for someone of my limited intelligence! :)

Only if it has sufficient current output

Yes

Some pedals might object to 12v being stuck in them. Just go for two power supplies - simple.

Yes, see what each one needs to operate, add the mA together, and buy a power supply that exceeds that total as you want to keep some back for additions.

Very bad. Especially, if the pedals operate internally with a complex power supply system.

Some pedals are more than happy to work at 12V though.

You would need a 12V to 9V converter and a daisy chain after that. It is not difficult to design/build but you will end up spending more than a separate PSU.

+1

"1000ma and all that jazz" is not that complicated. 1000mA (1A) is the maximum current (more or less: number of electrons/sec) that the PSU can supply. If you go above that limit the PSU starts reducing the voltage or fries.

The product V x I it is the maximum power the PSU can deliver. In this case 9V x 1000mA = 9 watt. (Which is always lower than the energy absorbed from the main: aka input power).

If you have a Boss/Roland ACR-230E the max output current is 500mA which might be below what you need.

As far as the sum of all the pedal energy requests is below 500mA (or 4.5W) the pedalboard will work happily. If it is above, you need another, more powerfull, PSU.
