Not by spring, but possibly by next winter?

Yeah - there was a disappointing amount of hype and euphoria on this particular announcement last week (which was certainly fanned by the Beeb amongst others). It seems that Pfizer were well aware that their vaccine, which needs to be stored at -80O C, would be rapidly superseded by vaccines that can be stored at higher, i.e. normal refrigeration, temps so they needed to get a "first mover" advantage by coming up with their press release first. Well it's worked for them: they have now secured orders for 300M vaccines from the EU following on from 40M or so from the UK. Transporting large volumes of vaccines at -80O C is going to be a rich-world luxury - guess we are very fortunate (yet again) to be living in an affluent part of the planet with comprehensive and free health care.

This just goes along with what some of us were saying that were bemoaned, it is good news that we want, but sensible caution was exhibited.

The real key is manufacture and distribution. The U.K. does not heavily manufacture, plus the big hubs for distribution and manufacture are Japan and guess what, Europe - the supply lines need to be drawn and we are probably not first on them for obvious reasons now being a spoke and not a hub.

There are of course other vaccines like the Oxford/Jenner one, not using new RNA tech which may usurp it, which is good news.

Dealing with the topic - if we can get things back on track for entertainment about Halloween/xmas party time that could be great for everyone

Don’t get me wrong - that will be great for small and big band’s alike

No doubt (hopefully) things will slacken for the Queen’s birthday and that could be a good barometer.

What will be interesting this Winter will be the proportion of hospital admissions (and unfortunately deaths which no one wants) normal winter flu/virus vs C-19 so we can have an accurate view of how it/they behave or interact. Let’s hope stats are accurately recorded to enable this and not just ‘assumed’

At least our govt have managed to get hold of enough vaccines for millions of us, which (I understand) unfortunately can't be said for 27 of our immediate neighbours; so we're defo on the right side of the Channel for once.

In August the EU reached a deal with Moderna to buy an initial 80 million doses of its vaccine with the option to buy 80 million more. The UK could have been part of the EU's purchasing programme, but declined. Moderna have just announced that their vaccine has almost 95% efficiency.

Presumably before any potential UK doses are delivered, Moderna would have to prioritize delivering on existing commitments to the EU, and any others who have already signed contracts to buy up vaccine stock?

Another rip-roaring UK government success story, particularly when considering the added benefits the Moderna vaccine is likely to have, being much easier to store/distribute that the Pfizer vaccine which requires storage at -70° C.

As long as we get a working vaccine I’m not that bothered which, tho if given the choice of which to administer from a logistical point of view Moderna would be my choice.

In a nutshell - as longs as its safe and it works

Agree, and even if the Pfizer one isn’t as easy to administer, securing a vaccine that could potentially save thousands of lives, plus the economical benefits we could get from things going back to normal I don’t see as a particularly bad thing.

A bit unfair to expect Senior Dept of Health advisers, who are making recommendations to Ministers on which vaccines to speculatively order before they are known to be effective, to make the right call on exactly which vaccines are going to succeed and which fail.

And in their defence, they've recommended a spread of 350M doses from various manufacturers to give us a very good chance that we will have ample supply; as the CEO of Moderna said today they are in near final discussions with the UK to supply the NHS.

I can see us all being issued with little plastic cards

saying we've been vaccinated and giving personal I D refs  (!)

otherwise how would you know that a potential contact 'should' be safe?

Another avenue for money making by fraudsters. Nobody knows yet how long immunity from any of the potential vaccines will last - something that’s possibly variable from person to person.

I know I won't be taking any vaccine for C19.  There have been too many lies and half-truths from the government already for me to trust any vaccine they buy. :(

Frank.

It’s a choice we will all have to make, I personally think there will be restrictions on people that don’t opt for it, I can definitely see know one being allowed to travel outside of their own country without being vaccinated, I can see some sort of health passport coming into force.

That's a really frightening thought!  I'll be resisting that 100%.  There will be riots if they try that sort of thing!

Our governments have already taken far more power than we elected them to have.  They have taken the power to tell us we can't leave our homes, hug our family, stopped us making a living by working, stopped us travelling, stopped us socialising.  It goes on and on...

And then, they are lying to us over the covid deaths, covid cases, the severity of covid, the state of the NHS, and much, much more.

And the BBC et al are like government spokespersons.  No questioning the situation, no investigations, no contrary views or opinions.  Just parroting the bullsh1t.

What happened to open and truthful government?

Ahhhhhhhh, relax. :)

Frank.

Personally speaking, I worry about having it and passing it onto someone else - an elderly relative for example - puts me off hugging and socialising. I’d stopped way before the inept, useless self-serving shower of a government told me to.

The only people lying about Covid are the ones parroting the nonsense about it being the same as flu, or otherwise trying to diminish its potential for death.

Silly thing is a hug is negligible for passing on the virus, just that little bit of contact can mean so much to people, but prolonged close proximity can transmit.

So far as the vaccine - it’s a personal choice for sure, but the data’s will have to be published, verified and scrutinised by non government associations/experts and made available and be published as well.

This should help people with their choices, and should not allow an agenda to be pushed and hopefully the correct vaccine(s) to be used and distributed.
