Music for pleasure vs for music viz learning

I spent some time with slapping and tapping as a younger player but long ago realised that I don't really like pretty much ANY of the music played using those techniques. So I stopped investing in those techniques. I listen and learn the same stuff mostly. If I don't listen to it, I tend not to try to learn it.

apart from some songs in the set list of my old band, I don't really know any new music since about 1992.

Exactly. While I think this is something we start to wear as a badge of honour as we get older, with the internet there's no excuse not to be finding new acts who float our individual musical boats.

True, but as has been mentioned in other threads - some started by me - there has not been any 'new' music for about 30 years, certainly in terms of music style/youth culture. Unless there are Chav bands, or Hipster bands?

On the other hand, as we get older, we have less and less time to 'waste' 'trawling', and tend to target more immediately-suitable stuff. It's too late for me, for instance, to even consider starting on any kind of appreciation of Disco-Funk, EDM or Punk. There's so much more 'classical' orchestral stuff that'll 'float my boat'. Just sayin'.  B|

While there was a wave of chav bands (Nu-rave bands like Enter Shikari and bands like HardFi), there are bands like GoGo Penguin who make music similar to post-rock with electronic ideas, but all done with jazz instrumentation. The London jazz scene at the moment is a mixing pot of styles, with full jazz bands on electronic kit playing alongside a DJ playing with samples, and the biggest culturally, Grime.

There's exciting, new stuff everywhere, it's just knowing where to look.

It gives my head a wobble when I think about it, but many songs have been ruined for me by trying to learn them, there's two categories:

songs that are so bloody easy that it's boring, (AC/DC anyone?)

songs that are just beyond my skill level, even after months of trying

These days I'm noticing incremental improvement, but I still can't play Ghost's Pinnacle to the Pit in tempo.

I pretty much play music I like but lockdown has been a great excuse to learn stuff I'd never buy. I have been jamming along with pop videos from the last 10yrs, 80s electronica and a whole host of bands that aren't strictly "my bag". Whatever you are doing, the important thing is to keep it fun.
