tobesvw
Hi all, This is a pretty shameless one off ask for help - I'm not a musician (although I do love music!) and haven't got the first clue about bass playing etc, but I am hoping that someone can help me. Recently a neighbour of mine sadly died, and his widow has asked me if I'd help her try and sell some of his music gear (he was in a jazz band). He's got a garage full of stuff which I don't have the first idea about. The first thing I've got is a Yamaha SLB-100 silent bass. I don't really know how much it's worth or the best place (apart from ebay) to sell this type of thing, I'm guessing it's quite a specialist piece of equipment. The guy from Yamaha reckons it might be about £900 or so but I have no idea whether this is realistic or not. Any help/advice regarding how much this would be worth or the best place to sell would be greatly appreciated. The second item that I will be helping to sell is a Vanden bass guitar which was made for Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention. Again, I have no idea how much something like that would be worth and whether it would be a collector's item type of thing or something someone would just want to buy to play. Any initial help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Edited March 23, 2009 by tobesvw

They are heading for a couple of grand new but the audience for such a thing will be small. I've seen them go nowehere on Ebay a few times. I would think £900 is a fair price that might actually sell. The Vanden thing is another matter - this would have been a custom job and probably very expensive. Why not give Vanden a call (http://www.vanden.co.uk/) and see what they think about it. Small outfits like this are often interested and helpful. Very high quality, hand made instruments... usually in the Gibson-style arch top jazz or semi mould. Gorgeous looking things. Do you have any photos of it? Value wise, I would imagine it would be similar to other top UK luthier-made instruments, although it's not necessarily as recognisable a name as some who concentrate on bass guitars. I doubt the provenance will add too much to the value.

I'm guessing this is an acoustic instrument?
tobesvw
Thanks, I'll have some photos of it over the next day or so and I'll post them up. We spoke to mike vanden but he just confirmed he had made it and who he made it for, no real idea on value. It's colour/design is called sunburst I think. Does look lovely I have to admit
paul h
Thomann have a SLB-100 listed, although currently unavailable. http://www.thomann.de/gb/yamaha_slb100_silentbass.htm So that will be an idea of a new price at least. tobesvw
ok, sorry for the slight delay but I now have pics of the silent bass and the Vanden bass meantioned earlier, and also another bass guitar - a Music Man. As I said before I don't know anything about these really or what they're worth, but if someone could give me a clue certainly on the two guitars I'd really appreciate it. I hope the pics work, this is the first time I've uploaded pics on this site... I have got other pics and also other instruments (trumpets etc) if anyone is interested in seeing those. Thanks for looking
GreeneKing
That Vanden is a thing of great beauty. As its quite unique I'd pitch it at a high price, possibly on US eBay with its provenance. The Yamaha is a good example of a EUB and someone here may be interested. I feel that it would be worth getting the best possible price for this guys beneficiaries. OutToPlayJazz
The Yamaha SLB should fetch a good price. Possibly around £800-£1000. They are very expensive new. As for the Sabre fretless, CrazyKiwi is our resident Sabre expert as far as I know.
waynepunkdude
That is a very high quality collection, the Sabre looks awesome. Does anyone recognise these basses? I just thought of the possibillty that the deceased owner could be a Basschatter? Good luck buddy. tobesvw
Thanks for the good comments guys, knowing next to nothing about bass guitars even I think they look cool. Forgive my Ignorance but what is a sabre? Is that just a particular make? Thanks

Thanks
It's the Music Man mate, it is a very nice bass probably not the most expensive bass in that collection but my favorite. Where are you based mate? I'm sure a one of the chaps on here would be happy to come round and give a value on the basses for you. dlloyd
The Sabre is very nice. They're not quite as iconic as Musicman Stingrays, and don't quite get the prices that Stingrays get, but you've got what looks like a fairly early, pre-EB model from around 1979-1984 which should bump up the value a bit. 1979 models are worth the most. The only way to be entirely sure of the date is to take the neck off and have a look at the dates in the neck pocket and on the neck heel. But I wouldn't do this unless you were sure you knew what you were doing. The serial number (the number under the bridge saddles) can give you a clue as they were assigned in roughly chronological order. http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/TOWN8019/mycustompage0011.htm I think you're looking at around £1,200 - £1,400 for it, depending on whether you can find a buyer in the current financial climate. tauzero
I've fallen in lust with that Vanden. Um, £25 and a bag of wine gums?

bassninja
God, I can't believe I'm about to say such an anoracky thing, but (deep breath)... The Vanden is really like the one Dave Pegg played in the summer of 1987, 'cos I remember it from that years Cropredy festival (one of the few things I can actually remember, though). It should be on the cover of their album 'In real time'. Looks like its been defretted though.
