lawriemacmillan
The bassline on Canned Heat from the album Synkronized was recorded on keyboard not bass guitar. Is there a pedal for bass guitar that can replicate this synth-y effect? I hear a bit of drive, octave and phase in it.
thisnameistaken
TBH I think just a good compressor and a good low-pass filter would do you right. It's quite a subtle sound, not far off an electric bass really.
lawriemacmillan
Thanks for that. Yeah, the filter I get. How about the synth bass sound on Anastacia's I'm Outta Love while we're at it?

It's a bit tricky because there's a filter sweep used, but it's only triggered occasionally, so if you were using an envelope filter you'd have to be really careful about your playing dynamics and set the filter's sensitivity pretty low. The EHX Bass Micro Synth would be a good solution, it could cop that tone, and do the filter triggering easily too - there's a trigger threshold for its sweep, rather than it being envelope-following, so it's more predictable and controllable and keyboard-sounding. Alternatively you could do it with a Boss OC-2 (or similar fat-sounding analogue octaver), any semi-subtle filter with a sensitivity control, and something to provide a little dirt between the OC-2 and filter to give that bit of colour when the filter starts to open. But you'd have to be quite disciplined with your picking hand. Edited March 20, 2009 by thisnameistaken
