Bilbo
Bearing in mind that he was called out and accused of being a 'Judas' for picking up an electric guitar in 1966, it seems wrong somehow that Bob Dylan has just sold the rights to his back catalogue for $300,000,000. I am not blaming him for doing it; why wouldn't you? but it seems like the ethos of the folk/hippy era has been sullied again in some way. Idealism takes another knock, I guess. A luxury of the young. http://www.msn.com/en-gb/entertainment/music/bob-dylans-entire-back-catalogue-bought-in-nine-figure-deal/ar-BB1bHKPG?ocid=ientp Edited December 7, 2020 by Bilbo
taunton-hobbit
(puts on tin hat) Music, at the end of the day, is a product. Dylan has lived very well off his version of that product for many years. He's astute enough to know that the zillion dollar sales are over and at 79 probably does not fancy the work that touring involves. He has children (several) and he's not getting any younger - this large amount of money merely stops any arguments (& represents a lump sum royalty?) The estate and it's survivors will benefit - what's not to like? 😎
wateroftyne
I completely understand why he's done it. He's not alone - Stevie Nicks just sold hers for $80m - but it still makes me a little sad. Then you have companies like Hipgnosis (not the Storm Thorgerson lot) snapping up entire catalogues for investors. Urgh.
Cato
Given the amount of money involved chances are that someone would have sold the rights after his death. At least this way he gets to enjoy the windfall himself.
TheGreek
It's "Money for old rope"...a product from yesterday that's now worth Millions which they won't have time to spend. In the same situation I'd take the money and run...

Bilbo
I am selling the rights to my entire back catalogue, if anyone is interested. I perfectly expect to be able to 'go large' at MacDonalds with the proceeds. 😉 Edited December 7, 2020 by Bilbo
ped
Might be being a bit thick here but what would someone do with the rights - re-release stuff and do remixes/remasters etc?

lemmywinks
If you look at what's happened to Hendrix's estate then maybe it's for the best, just leave everyone a humongous amount of money with nothing to sue each other over. Not saying his offspring are like that but money does funny things to people.
oldslapper
Good on him. The suits have been making zillions out of other people’s creativity, and will continue to do so. Glad he and his family will see the fruits of his labours. (Yes I know he’s worth a shed load already).

It's not what's done with it, it's the notion of 'deserving' that I don't agree with, that's all (him nor anyone else, myself included, obviously...)
