Hobbayne Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Nice little vid here from Sir Horace 18 Quote
Rich Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Ahh dude this man is a god. The reason I picked up a bass in the first place. 3 Quote
Maude Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 That light blue one looks lovely, shame about the dead spot. I've been trying to avoid stuff we gig as it makes me realise how much I miss it, but the snippet of Nite Club made me go and listen to a live version of it. I love playing that one live, the guitar and vocals used to leave it ages to come back in on the 'that bass part'. Just me and the drums grooving and everyone dancing. Octave runs galore 😁. 3 Quote

Yeah, me too. Love that song. 1 Quote
Rich Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 And me 3. One of my favourites in our set. 1 Quote
Frank Blank Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 What a dude *stands up, salutes* The Specials were such a great band and his bass lines were just perfect, bang on the money. One of my favourite bass players of all time. 1 Quote
KevL Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 His playing is excellent on many of The Specials' songs but I think the best example is Too Much Too Young from their eponymous debut album (note that the single version is quite different). Quote
Marvin Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 Ghost Town was the first single I bought with my own money. I was 8 I think, I bought it in a branch of Littlewoods. Anyway, I love Mr Panter's bass playing. He also seems a really nice bloke. Win win Quote
Maude Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 His book 'Ska'd For Life' is a good read. Amazingly he hadn't really been playing long when he joined The Specials and seemed genuinely giddy with the rollercoaster ride. 1 2 Quote

I didn’t know he had a book out, I’ll look it up, thanks for the heads up. 1 Quote
leftybassman392 Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 [Namedrop] I knew Horace before he was famous. He went to school with my next door neighbour and would pop round for a chat from time to time. That was the late '70s. Then the band took off and I never saw him again. [/Namedrop] 4 Quote
Ricky 4000 Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 (edited) Playing that Tele body / P neck as mentioned in the OP. Edited December 22, 2020 by Ricky 4000 3 Quote
lowdown Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 Good stuff and thanks for posting. In true Bass player style, he signs off with a little bit of Slap & Tickle, along with a touch of Bass face and his tongue accenting the slide down from the E.... Priceless...... 1 Quote

Or F, as interestingly, they're tuned a half step up compared to the songs on the album. 👍 1 Quote

Misdee Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 Superb bass player, terrific band, truly great song. Growing up at this time as I did , the late 1970's/early 1980's was an era when music seemed to be more important in peoples lives compared to now, and the Specials epitomise that period to me. Quote
