A pal asked me about the Gibson Thunderbird Studio bass and how it compared to a "standard" model.  I have no idea so asking Basschatters for their experience plese.  Were they a cheaper model, still manufactured, etc?

Yeah they were set neck instead of multi laminate through neck, smaller head, same electronics.

Sort of a sucked sweetie version, softer edges.

there was a 5 string too and a short scale.

Think they were £799 ish when full fat t-bird was £1100.

Black or Wine Red.

Yup, set neck instead of the through neck. IIRC, they did a Firebird Studio as well as the Thunderbird, but with full size humbuckers instead of the standard Firebird's mini humbuckers.

I'd imagine that there's bugger all difference in the sound in the real world. You'd think the set neck might need to have a thicker body than the through neck, but it never really effected the SG other than the position of the neck pickup.

Another very short lived series.

Again, IIRC, it was linked to Dave Grohl (before he started using the Trini Lopez).

Gibson never really cared about basses, chopping and changing year to year. Shame coz they made some good basses.

I have a Gibson Les Paul bass. As far as I know its pretty much the same as the Thunderbird apart from looks. It certainly is a lovely sounding bass.
