MJJS
Sorting out my study I realise that converting to 5 strings a few years back means I have left some old friends behind. Oh well ...

LeftyJ
Wow, that must be a really early Status Series 2, with those exposed pole piece GMT pickups! Beautiful. Edited January 6, 2021 by LeftyJ
MJJS
I have no evidence, but the previous owner told me it appeared on Trent d’Arby’s second album. It’s an ‘84 I believe.

molecule
I had two of those Westone basses in the last century. My version of the Thunder IIIA was my first fretless, but I let them both go as I moved on to five string basses. Now I have started acquiring four string basses again I am wondering why I let any of them go! My current fretless is also a classic Status S2, with five strings, it is a lovely instrument and my lightest bass despite being the oldest in the collection.

It’s an ‘84 I believe. I'd think the date is about right (or possibly '83). I ordered mine in late '84 and it was delivered in '85. By the delivery date the GMT pickups no longer had exposed pole-pieces. The serial number might be some indication of build date? Whatever, great to see one of these early SIIs. Absolutely fantastic basses (and what a lovely find). Do you know what the facing timber might be? Possibly Padauk but it looks quite a bit lighter than mine - I can't remember what facings were on offer at the time (beyond Maple and Padauk) Edited January 7, 2021 by three

Krysbass
Great to see another Westone Thunder III in such good order. Modernised my identical TIII a couple of years ago with Bartolini pickups and pre-amp to give it a new lease of life primarily for my 80s band, only for the band to fold shortly after. Thankfully, well made basses last a lot longer than the flaky, enthusiasm bypass of some band members.😀
MJJS
The Westone is the only one I owned from new and gigged in the 80s. Never let me down and doesn’t appear to have a scratch on it.
