Rich
Don't know what made me think of it, but this morning my memory randomly dug up a quote from Melissa Auf Der Maur in Bass Guitar magazine: Q: "Are you still playing Precisions? A: "...there's no reason as a bass player to play anything else. Maybe if you were playing jazz or funk, but for heavy rock riffs the Precision is the only one that's round enough and has the attack. A Jazz is good for walking around and going dink-dink-dink...." An interesting POV from Ms. On The Wall, I'm sure you'll agree. Incidentally, has anybody here ever managed to get their bass to actually go 'dink'? ABOVE: a Mr Trujillo walking around and going dink-dink-dink. yorks5stringer
I thought Melissa had let herself go a bit until I re-read the thread....

Doctor J
The beauty of the Precision is its simplicity. The lack of options makes it hard for even the most determined dullard to make it sound bad. A Jazz bass provides the user with the capability to get it wrong and, when this happens, the frustrated user can blame the bass as, in their head, the fault can't be with them as they sound fine with a Precision.

A very good point, and certainly one that applied to me until only very recently 🤣

Marvin
It must be said the John Paul Jones and Geddy Lee's 'dink' phases were ok though...weren't they?

silverfoxnik
She does have a point about Precision and heavy rock though.. It has been - and still is - a tried and tested, winning combination for a lot of bassists working in that genre.
Eldon Tyrell
I totally dink it. Can you dink it? BTW, Melissa is 6th in SBL's "The 8 Greatest Women of ROCK Bass". So, show some respect 🙂 Check her out from 04:54 onwards.
Doctor J
I've got lots of respect for her, have her solo, Smashing Pumpkins and Hole albums, but that doesn't mean she's above talking jibba jabba 🙂

Nail Soup
Makes me think of Dinky Diamond who was in Sparks classic 70's UK line up. He was a drummer though......😕

Graham56
My P-bass goes 'Dink' quite often - it's the sound it makes when the headstock hits the cymbals on a cramped stage...
