For all the basses I have loved...

Some of these humungous lists look like an endless quest for tone....wouldnt it be better just to have a couple of basses and simply practise more.....

I think that's what people do... they just swap their two basses at regular intervals.

can I say ta for the folk putting the description in as well - there's a load of stuff I've been "I wouldn't mind one of them" and someone saying "had one, it was shite" helps save me money!! :D

Think @cetera has me beat. I concede graciously.

Whenever Mrs Shaggy has a go at me about the number of basses cluttering up the house, I usually show her cetera’s list to show her there are bassists  with a worse problem than me......;) (I’ll now include Hellzero’s list)

Mine; in roughly chronological order, so starting back in 1977, those still with me in bold:

  • mid-‘60’s Kalamazoo KB1, black/white pg / rosewood (cost me all of £25, paired with home-built amp)
  • Columbus Jazz bass copy, 3TSB/ tort / rosewood  (urgh......)
  • 1979 Ibanez MC900 Musician, natural stained ash / ebony (the only one on list bought new)
  • bitsa fretless P, natural ash/maple (only bass for the next 16 or so years......)
  • 1980’s Graham Crook custom neck- thru fretless, natural sapele / ebony
  • 1980 MusicMan Sabre, natural alder/ black pg / maple
  • 1977 Ovation Magnum 1 fretless, natural mahogany / ebony
  • A couple of self-build bitsa P’s
  • OLP MM5, natural quilt maple / maple
  • 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 (Jetglo)
  • 1990’s Listerud Totem 7-string, natural wenge / maple
  • 1972 Fender P (modded P/J & fretless conversion, 3TSB/tort/ebony)
  • 1978 Gibson RD Artist (modded passive, natural maple / maple)
  • 1980’s Gordon Smith Galaxy bass  (semi), cherry sunburst / rosewood
  • 1990’s USA BC Rich Eagle NT Custom, tobacco sunburst / ebony
  • 1997 Rickenbacker 4003 fretless,  mapleglo
  • 1980’s Steve Smith long-scale “EB-2” (semi), Cherry sunburst / rosewood
  • 1978 Gibson RD Artist, Fireburst / ebony
  • 1965 Fender Precision (L-series), 3TSB / tort / rosewood
  • Paulman Custom 5 string, natural quilt maple, rosewood
  • 1985 Wal Mk 1 Custom fretless, American walnut / ebony
  • 1969 Gibson EB-2DC, cherry / rosewood
  • 1976 Alembic Series 1 (long scale), birdseye maple, ebony
  • 1975 Travis Bean TB2000, natural koa / alu neck
  • 1965 Gibson Thunderbird IV, sunburst, rosewood
  • 1972 Rickenbacker 4001, flameglo
  • 1958 Gibson EB-2, tobaccoburst, rosewood
  • Custom Warmoth Fenderbird, cocobolo, rosewood
  • 1977 Kramer 650B, American black walnut / alu neck
  • 2000 USA Fender Jazz ‘75 AVRI, natural ash / maple
  • 1985 Gibson Explorer bass, Ferrari red / rosewood
  • 1983 Wal Mk 1 Custom, wenge / rosewood (acquired in modded state and restored by Wal to original spec)
  • 1966 Vox Wyman bass (made in England), tobaccoburst / rosewood
  • 1957 Fender Precision, tobaccoburst / white pg/ maple
  • 1982 Wal mk1 Custom, amber flame sycamore / rosewood
  • 1979 CF Martin EB-18, natural maple / rosewood
  • 1977 Kramer 450B fretless, American black walnut / alu neck
  • 1981 Gibson RD Artist CMT, vintage sunburst / ebony
  • Bitsa P (“Sid Vicious” tribute), Oly White / tort / maple
  • 1998 Warwick FNA (MIG), amber flame maple / wenge
  • 2001 Warwick LX Streamer Jazzman (MIG), French violet flame maple / wenge

Two things apparent to me when making the list- 1. I’ve kept too many of them, and 2. how many basses I’ve traded with a certain Mr Chris Beedster (there were a few amps and acoustic guitars too....)

Really interesting  thread! I just worked out that I will have been playing bass for 25 years next month so below is the list of instruments I've got through between the ages of 14 and (almost) 39. I blame Basschat for forcing me to make the majority of the later purchases here against my pathetically weak will and better instincts.

I feel slightly embarrassed by the amount of gear I've got through in that time but to be honest, looking at some of the other epic lists that this thread has brought to light, it's not that bad! The basses listed in bold are the ones I currently own.

Anyhoo, here goes:

1996: 1995 Ibanez TRB70 bass

My first bass, decent bass for a beginner and looked very slick, got me through my first school bands. Very unreliable pickups with pole pieces regularly sinking into the pickup casings!

1999: Fender BG-29 Acoustic Bass

Bought for acoustic jams, very dull sounding acoustic bass and too quiet - pretty useless in hindsight, should have put the cash towards a better electric bass.

2000: Warwick Streamer Standard 5 string

Youthful ignorance compelled me towards this tone deficient  shocker in the form of Warwick's (then) newly produced budget Streamer line. Had a B string slack enough to use as a skipping rope. Awful bass.

2003: Music Man StingRay in Pacific Blueburst

My first quality instrument. Absolute beauty!

2008: Fender GB-41SCE Acoustic Bass

Another Fender acoustic... Way better than the BG-29 though, way louder, and the size of a house. Finding a case or gigbag to fit was a bit of a mission.

2008: Music  Man StingRay HS

The bass I regret selling the most. An absolute belter - the Jazz pickup coupled with the MM humbucker makes all the difference, but like wearing an anvil across your shoulder. Character building from a gigging perspective!

2014: Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass

Lovely bass - neck just far too thin for my hands and very prone to bowing, so it got moved on

2015: Bassix EUB

Enthusiasm got the better of me with this one; bought from an extremely shifty American guy on Gumtree, who was about to leave the country. Got it home and realised there was a fault with the electronics and some not-obviously apparent damage to the body that the sneaky f*%£$$  wasn't upfront about.

2016: Stanford Robot Acoustic Bass

Indisputably the best acoustic bass in all aspects in that price range. A very lucky purchase!!

2017: Fender US Geddy Lee Jazz Bass

Awesome! An absolute beast of a bass and has the most amazing neck with a thicker profile that makes it super fast but also more substantial than your usual Jazz neck. Just wish I didn't have to take the neck off every time I need to adjust the truss rod.

2018: Bridge Cetus Electric Double Bass

Lovely bass with a hollow body making it much more comfortable to play than a lot of other EUB type basses - sold hastily and regrettably as a result of repetitive strain injury and sudden change in circumstances.

2020: Ibanez GWB20th 5 string fretless

Bought on a whim to replace the Cetus. The quickest I've ever moved a bass on, owned for just a couple of months. String spacing was too close for my sausage fingers, ended up being an expensive way to come to the conclusion that fretless bass just ain't my thing. Sold at a serious loss too.

2020: Ibanez TR200 bass 1997

The bass I wanted when I was 15 but couldn't afford, bought in April last year; I've upgraded the bridge, tuners and pickups. Still persevering trying to get on with it, and get a tone I like out of it.

Anyhow, I work bloody hard and if I don’t spend it on basses...it’ll be cheap cars, fast drugs and hard women...

This explains why I have only owned two basses in my life.

(For the record: a US Fender Precision that I sold in 1989, and the Warwick Thumb I bought last year.)

I can’t remember many of the basses I’ve owned over the last 30 years (more like about 22-23 years as I stopped playing altogether for a while). I’d estimate around 200-250 basses, but having got about 100 I do remember down on paper and adding up the rough cost of each (almost all used) it’s very sobering. Probably £80,000-100,000 😧

i should show this thread to my wife, this makes my instrument purchasing look really tame!

In some kind of chronological order i think

1- Aria IGB something or other (medium scale maybe) Blue PJ - traded a Yamaha dreadnaught for it with a friend that wasn't getting on with being a bassist, gave it away to a friend who then passed it on to a kid at church that wanted to learn bass

2- Yamaha RBX765a - red, bought for peanuts from a friend that was having a clear out, gave it to another friend that fancied trying 5 strings.

3 - Fender 1977 P-bass - modified with an added J-pup and all the finish stripped off, bought from a friend of a friend @dodge_bass it's very heavy and has very little frets left but just a glorious tone monster.

4- bitsa PJ i built as a backup bass, didn't get much use, traded it locally for a few pedals

5 - Bitsa j-bass as above but sold it to a friend for their kid to learn on

6- Letts 5 string singlecut - bought due to one of the special deals he did for basschat members.

7 - Warwick Rockbass corvette 5 string - bought cheap from the classifieds here as a project, someone had repainted it really badly so i stripped and oiled it, it looked great when finished but i just couldn't get on with the tight string spacing so sold it on facebook.

8 - Yamaha BEX4 - Bought form a basschatter, fitted some black tapewounds, loved the tone and the looks but just couldn't got on with the ergonomics - again sold locally.

9- Squier VM 77 p-bass - bought as a backup to the real 77, got hardly any use so sold it on

10 - Aria Cardinal CSB300 - bought it locally from a basschatter @benebass, it had been defretted at some point so I had new frets fitted, it's a YOB bass so will be staying, gets regular use.

11. Kala U-bass, - my first attempt to get a vaugely upright tone, gets regualr outings for acoustic gigs

12 - Stagg EUB - found it very cheap at a guitar shop in town, just couldn't resist.

13 - Aria IGB30 (i think)  short scale single p-pup bass, fitted a bart pickup and some flats, gives a great p-bass sound and it fits in a guitar hard case so easy to transport.

14 - Squier VM P5, bought as a stage backup to the Letts, sold it locally as it wasn't getting much use and someone was particularly looking for one (also making space for No 15)

15 - still in discussion/design phase!

there are a whole bunch of guitars as well but this is a bass forum!

Matt

EDIT - Squier Bronco Badzt Maru - bought from @mcnach in a coffee shop in Edinburgh, really enjoyed it but sold to another basschatter @NancyJohnson when they put up a  wanted ad, one of the ones i wished i'd kept.

Oooh I wonder if I can remember all mine...

Vester Jazz bass - still own but on long term loan with my best mate

Fender MIM V - upgraded to Bartolinis and a J-Retro, cost me loads and eventually sold for Less than the PUps and Pre together :(

Status Groove fretless - the last “real” Groove ever, before Rob made three with a graphite neck a few years later. Bought direct from Status and eventually sold in about 2014

Status Groove 5 string. Bought from an old Bassworld chap via eBay, sadly the seller died about a year later. Think that’s with a Basschatter still, @silverfoxnik had it briefly IIRC

Dean Edge - bought when a band of mine had a deal with Dean back in the mid-2000s, sold when I quit the band a year later. Actually had 2 IIRC

Status Retroactive J - commissioned in 2006 and main bass until 2015, sold it to my uncle in 2018 after he fell in love with it

At least two fretted Status Groove 4s, I remember former BC member Toasted brokering one of the deals for me as he was round the corner from the seller. One was white, which I bought after my Nan died. The other was sunburst. Great basses and still for me one of the most comfortable on the strap.

Status Shark 5 - I owned this twice 😳 Sold it when I decided I didn’t want a 5er anymore then bought it back when the guy who’d bought it from me decided he didn’t get on with it. Sold again when I converted to shelter scale and ACG.

ACG Recurve - owned for about a month back in 2014 then decided I needed to commission my own. I sold it to a BCer but embarrassed to say I can’t remember who.

ACG Finn 5 custom. 33” Scale, beautiful bass. Commissioned 2014, sold in 2017 when my function band days seemed over.

(All the basses above now gone, all the basses below I still own)

ACG Finn 4. My go-to bass to this day, ash body, maple neck and board, single P-type pickup, passive, 32”. Glorious.

ACG Skelf 32” 5-string. An all-out rock monster, limba body, ash neck, rosewood board, twin reverse and overwound P pickups. Sounds massive, plays beautifully.

Zoot Funkmeister 32” - a glorious passive super-J, basically replaced my Status Retroactive as my more “traditional” looking bass.

Conway Instruments Taranis Fretless - the first bass built by a friend of mine. 30” scale, 5 string, very tasty selection of woods and a single Nordstrand MM5:4 pickup.

ACG Finn 5 32”. Well, I missed the old custom one so commissioned a new one as a nod to both that and my Finn 4. Ash body, maple and bubinga neck, maple board. Two slimline humbuckers, East Electronics UniPre. Best 5 string I’ve ever played

...and this is almost here...:

ACG TKO Classic, 4 string 30.5” scale, no more specs til I get to show it off later this year 😎

I’ve missed off a few basses which barely stayed in the house longer than a week, if I can remember them I’ll come back and add them in. At least 3 missing I think 😂

I love this thread - it's like a thousand thousand Hail Mary's for those of us who've ever felt a tad guilty about our Bass Acquisition Programme over the years... 😁

@Merton - that Status Groove was a quality bass! Wish I still had it (famous last words round here of course).

Naturally, I blame @ped and @Kiwi for setting up this cloud based porn shop in the first place ...

"I'd have never, ever purchased all that bass gear if it weren't for them, your Honour..." 😩😁

Back on topic, I can't remember all the basses I've had since I got my first Woolworth's special as a Xmas present when I was about 14... 🤔

..But I'm guessing it's at least 10(0). 😉

First bass, school project - blockwood body, teak neck, Formica fretboard, no intonation adjustment, no truss rod, string height adjustment by grinding metal off the bridge. It worked, just.

Bought and sold:
Yamaha BBN4: upgraded to a 5-string, then sold this one.
Cort Curbow: 5-string (owned for about a week, didn't like the tone through my rig, exchanged for RBX 765)
Yamaha RBX765: 5-string - still got this
Warwick Corvette 4-string fretless - Bubinga body, Wenge neck, Ebony fingerboard. Tuned BEAD. First attempt at fretless, eventually upgraded to a 5-string
Warwick Corvette 5-string fretless - Swamp-ash body, Ovankol neck. Neck heavy compared to 4-string: tried various fixes then sold it
Steinberger CR5M: 5-string EUB - hands couldn't cope so sold it.
Yamaha TRB1005: 5-string fretless - nice to play, but my playing did not make the progress I had hoped for - sold it.
Ibanez EWB205: 5-string ABG -still got this
4-string headless bass kit: started as a Hohner Jack copy and then I clipped its wings so it's an asymmetric paddle - still got it, but not playing it.
Countryman Bass ukulele: tried EADG, then BEAD then decided to stick with 5-string basses only. Sold it
Hohner B2 V: 5-string headless - nice and small for playing under a gazebo in the rain (I'm a busker) Still got it.
