Manwithvan
I thought this didn’t quite qualify for eBay weird & wonderful, but I did find it weird. Why did this ordinary Jaguar get bid up to £395? Manwithvan
So my silver one will struggle to make £100?
yorks5stringer
Just now, Manwithvan said: So my silver one will struggle to make £100? 'In this crazy world that we are living', who knows? I had one of the last Jaguar L/S 5 stringers in Red a few years ago and it had to go back to Fender with a rattling truss rod. It's a story I have told many times as I told the Shop not to send it back to Fender without letting me know. They ignored me and offered me a credit. There were by then none new in the whole world in red and I could have botched/fixed the rattle myself. I was fuming...
hooky_lowdown
Give it a week, and it'll probably amazingly reappear for sale on flea bay again.
Manwithvan
Yeah probably! But I had noticed this listing with three days to go and it was already at £295 with at least five bidders over £
Maude
I missed out on a red one of these which came up on fb marketplace local to me. A woman had bought it for her son to learn on, he'd tried it twice and given up. As new with all the plastic films still on, £100 ono including hard case. As I'd just bought a Talman short scale I thought do I need it and dithered for ten minutes, then it was gone.
casapete
Since these were introduced, there has been a surge of interest in Fender offset designs. As they are no longer available new, perhaps it’s just down to supply and demand? I had a black one a few years ago and it was a great bass, wish I’d never sold it now. When new they were going for around £180 - ish IIRc and were on sale everywhere. Sold my mint black one for £120 and remember thinking that someone was getting a great bass for the money, but £395 to me does seem way OTT. grandad
A bought one of these in sunburst off fleabay a couple of years ago for about £125 to try one out and compare with my Squire Mustang. Results were it was OK at it's price point but overall quality not as good. I set it up and restrung it and my grandson has it now. My VM Squire Mustang is a keeper and and one of my favourites. The Jag is OK as a starter bass and I would put it in the <£200 price range. But I've auctioned stuff on ebay and not got 1/2 what I estimated. Also sold stuff and got way more than expected. Now, if I do ebay anything I prefer to fix the price and maybe accept a fair offer. Much prefer to sell on BC though.
casapete
They were / are the perfect starter bass, and look quite cool too. Mine was really light and played well, should have kept it really. I thought the black finish worked well with the black headstock (which they all had), wasn’t sure about how the red and black combo looked though to be honest. Len_derby
My initial thought that this price was driven by the recent upsurge in interest in short scale basses. Then I saw on FB that someone thirty minutes walk away from my home is selling a barely played all black Ibanez TMB 30 plus strap for £120 ono. Must resist.... Jean-Luc Pickguard
They're great little basses with a very easy playing neck but that price surprises me. My red squier jaguar SS was my main gigging bass in a previous blues/rock band. It cost £165 new from Thomann when they were first available. I've fitted EMG-X pickups & BTC system preamp, fender hi-mass bridge and upgraded tuners so its probably worth 400 to me.
martthebass
Think I bought a silver one of these used a couple of years back for £150, it was dirty but mint but didn't work for me so I sold it on for the same as I bought it iirc. I do get the 'rare' colour thing though, it really went against the 'Yorkshire' ethic when I paid well over the odds for a used Mikey Way Mustang about 3 years back (a good £100-125 over the new price) but they were like rocking horse poo and I wanted one for the 'Glam' look. Stub Mandrel
I bought one of these new for, I think, about £180 with a shop discount. I'm surprised one can make £395 already, but I suspect that in 10-20 years they will be very desirable. The build quality is spot on. The candy apple red is flawless, the fretboard is really nicely finished with rolled edges. The shop said that they were selling as fast as they could put them on the racks. <edit> perhaps not that extreme a price: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Squier_Jaguar.html £350 https://reverb.com/uk/p/squier-vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-ss £305 Black one in Japan: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Squier-by-Fender-Vintage-Modified-Jaguar-Bass-Black-Electric-Bass-Guitar/224237487303?hash=item34359884c7:g:92oAAOSw6DBfsyib $652 (!) (there's another for just over $400 and another at just over $600) I could find cheaper silver and black ones for about £150 - but these were sold without a clear indication of the date. Well I never thought of this bass as an investment! Edited January 22, 2021 by Stub Mandrel
