GarageBand question

Quick question here for a novice 🤓, I installed GarageBand yesterday, and I have an irig2, and after a lot clicking around managed to import a backing track a friend sent me, and I’ve sort of found out how to record my bass, but I can’t play over the backing track and hear what I’m playing, it’s one or the other,  on this video at 3.42 it says there’s a monitor option, but it isn’t on the app, any ideas, cheers

Is that on the Mac or on iOS - I assume iOS with your video?

Now I look at garage band there doesn't appear to be a monitoring unless you are recording (not when just playing). As you said, there used to (I use JamUp or BIAS Amp, which were always better at playing along to a track) and it also depends on your interface (I am not familiar with the IRig).

If you set it to record, you can use the monitor button and just throw the recording away when you have finished. If you are not recording though I would still use something like JamUp for just playing along.

Tony - 2 things that may help

GO to settings and advanced and click run app in the background - you can then play when say listening to a track in Spotify or whatever or when not directly in the app.

 

I am pretty sure you can listen and play whilst the track is playing but not recording, but when you add a second track into the stream you have to make sure monitoring is available for both

Whenever i do a new track i normally just use voice or instrument, go to producer effects/fun - have it on clean - then you can use anything external you already have.

Actually the tube amp isn’t too bad as re other effects in there for a bit of a mess around.

 

Lemme set one up from scratch again and see how i managed it - but i am pretty sure its monitoring for both tracks has to be selected

Make sure you have the settings correct for each track

Many Thanks cuzzie, I’ll take another look, I lost hours yesterday trying to figure it out , I was looking for the simplest way to record the bass over a backing track

Have to walk the dog, but i do it not infrequently- I’ll check again in a bit and give you a nudge if you haven’t done it already.

 

to import tracks i usually have them saved on the device and just import as an mp3 with a right click (effectively) and make sure you set the tempo to the same as the recording tempo if you want any formal control and pass it back and forth between people

OK - i am sure you have it, but just as a 101 for people.......

Clicking this helps you set up basic stuff on the track as you can see

 

Tapping the plus button ads another track and you can chose what, if inserting music, i suggest the studio clean one, no effects

 

Swipe to the right it gives you the chance to monitor and which one to record

In the settings and advanced settings you can also select multi track recording

select The loop - you can add drum loops and apple loops etc. But select your files tab and whatever is on your device you can browse - here you see it likes m4a and mp3, not aac weirdly (this is an ipad)

Drag it into a track line and chop and match to zero or wherever you want it to start

bingo - play and record alongside a track

Thanks cuzzie, I wasn’t dragging the track across, which I’ve just done 👍 and it plays , but I can’t hear the bass unless I switch the irig2 switch off of FX and on to thru , then the track goes off

Have you enabled multi track recording in advanced settings?

Have you also selected Monitoring for both tracks?

I did the demo using a focusrite iTrack solo

I’ll dig out my Irig and check as well after tea - just doing a Burns supper!

Supper was nice thanks - got the whiskey sauce just right

iRig lost somewhere in the gear vortex-not sure it should behave much differently tho......

It’s taken endless hours cuzzie but I’m getting there, I can import tracks now and record over them yay 😀, I’m now going through all the settings and bar lengths , I’m quite enjoying it , it’s a new learning curve

Good man - if you can work Garageband then if you want to go full DAW Logic is very similar and of course has loads more 🤘🏾👊🏾💪🏾👌🏾👍🏾

Cheers, I’ll stick with GarageBand for the moment, but I’ll take a look at Logic, I tried AmpliTube before that, but gB seems simpler
