iPads and obsolescence

Picked an iPad up off a mate today, I've been after one for a while.

All set up, download GarageBand, which I’m actually getting really comfortable with for demos and remote recording.

”you must download ios13 or higher to use this app...”

Oh balls. This is an older 4th gen iPad. It will only go up to ios11 Ok ok, I’ll use it for the kids...attempt to download Google apps etc...”you must download ios13 or higher...”

FOR FECKING GOOGLE?!

Anyhow, I’ve given it my mum for browsing Wayfair and Wowcher or whatever 63 year old grandma’s do...

Set all the websites she likes as desktop items via Safari.

Blah. I was so disappointed, a bit deflated.

So I just bought an iPad 8th generation (basic model) which will be solely used for recording and band stuff like social media.

AO doing 12m 0% so was rude not to really.

iPad 8 was released in September 2020 so I will get at least 6 months out of it before it’s defunct 😂

I got an old iPad for my 86 year old father for his Facebook and other stuff whatever that may be, he has an old iPhone of mine too, good luck with that, I spend more time trying to find what he’s done to them and “now it doesn’t work” than he does using them 🤣😂🤣

Annoyingly, I think the 5th gen would’ve done, oh well.

New toy Tuesday for me...

You’re buying another lovely 70s p bass and selling it again before any dust has actually settled on it ? 🤨

If you should go before me... can I have your stuff?

Haha. Well, I hope to stick around for a good while mate. I’m only 36. Still, if 2020 taught me anything it was that “no age” doesn’t count.

It will all be left to the kids.

Suppose you could woo Mrs T once I’m gone; it’s alright - ive set the bar low, she really expects nothing but convenient bill sharing and relentless disappointment.

I hear you loud and clear brother. There are far cheaper alternatives to Apple, BUT, I really can’t talk. I’m pretty much fully converted to Apple - in fact, the whole house is. The knack to keeping ahead of the curve is updating the iPad fairly regularly and selling the old stuff before it represents too much of a financial loss. It’s at a cost, but it gives me piece of mind. I know where everything is, it’s secure, it’s backed up and I literally use my pad for everything. Rehearsing (plugged into a Bass Buddy), sheet music (OnSong), recording through Garage Band, sharing music/docs via Dropbox and very occasionally looking at Basschat 😂. It’s sad, but I would feel like I had lost a limb without it.

Cheers @hiram.k.hackenbacker, thing is - I can work quickly on GarageBand and share with guitarist and drummer who use logic.

Also, I’ve spent £150 on an interface (Apogee Jam+) which works well with Apple...so I’m used to it all.

This is plenty for me - I realised that AO.com had offered me up to £2000 when I went for interest free but I’ll pay it off in 2 months and have done with it.

Just didn’t have £360 this month after putting 2 new tyres on the Volvo 🙄

Count your blessings - i got my 87 year old dad an Android tab last year and get the same calls to go and sort it out as he's done something to it. A common issue appears to be that he's discovered internet porn. He keeps leaving it lying around with various interesting tabs and pop ups open and i'm trying to get him to understand that his carers may not be too impressed with him if he's not more discrete with it. He's got Alzheimers too so every visit is a schoolday for him as we go through exactly the same routine of closing all the porn down and then showing him how to use WhatsApp 😂

And yet he always remembers there’s porn... 😂🤣

at least he has his priorities and is sticking to them 👍🏻

I had a similar problem recently , I’ve currently got the iPad pro and thought I would use my older iPad  for GarageBand , but it only goes to iOS 12, I don’t know how true it is , but I read somewhere that you can change it by plugging it into a laptop, is that possible?

I read something about this, it sounded really convoluted so instead of the headache of trying to set it up with potentially limited success...I’d just spend the couple of hundred quid difference.

Im too much of a technophobe to get into it.

I think you used to be able to download an older version of the app by signing in with your account on a newer device, downloading the latest version and then trying again on the old device. No idea if this works for free apps or just paid ones or even if it's still a feature.

I only bought my iPad to use the Mackie mixer app but it would have been handy to have the Kindle app on there for the van journeys home etc, sadly even that requires IOS 12 which is mental. One of the best uses for old tablets is as ebook readers but in this case forced obsolescence renders them ewaste.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got an older Gen 3 iPad that I still keep kicking around as it runs Behringer's X-Air and X-32 Apps for my XR-18 and X32 Rack respectively - it means that I don't particularly worry about anything happening to it (I have at a push run the desk from a phone!) and it's heavy enough to beat the local hoodlums to death in the event of an incident actually occurring at a venue!
