Probably the inspiration behind the Squier Parallel Universe Jazz Bass '54 (which has J pickups instead of SCPB's).

You could nab the Squier mentioned in the above post and add the split j pick ups and you’d be pretty close but obviously not with a true 51 style look.

A very nice man in Paisley is selling one such Squier bass. I’d personally vouch for @jezzaboy having had some dealings with him. I was tempted to take this from him as I have those split j pick ups in my go to jazz, also a Squier (CV) which is cracking value for money!

There is something very alluring about that design, and with a couple of Nordstrand Split '51s in there it would I imagine be something really special https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Nordstrand_Jazz_pickups.html

It’s a great body shape, concentric controls and that pick up upgrade should look ‘period correct’ as well as deliver that more characteristic 51 sound. I feel like I’m talking myself into it😀

It's a lovely looking bass! I've a strong preference for the standard jass pickguard and three hole control plate however. The driver is to achieve a bass with the look and feel of a Jazz Bass (minus bridge pickup) but the with sound of a 51 single coil. I'd contemplated a Mark Hoppus bass but prices seem to be climbing, then thought may aswell get an American P, but having previously owned a few and not quite finding the colour combo etc I think I'm going to try this custom build with the single coil as opposed to split etc. Fingers crossed! Just what neck to purchase...

The folks in Spain buy the body you want from guitarbuild.co.uk, give it a nitro finish of your choice then send it on to you.

Nice - thanks that is awesome - I'm going to see if they do a candy tangerine!

Hoppus used a jazz body with a p pick up  (as I’m sure you know) The other option is nab a cheapie jazz fill the bridge route, refin and add a neck pick up to suit.

You know that just didn't occur to me?!! It's a tempting option that. Self build I'm probably looking at £5-600 min if going with a fender neck and half decent pickups

I would buy a cheap Jazz body and install the Nordie Split 51's. Cant lose

I have a CV Squier I bought locally for £120. Already a good bass. Added the split 51 pick ups and it’s a great bass! Refin’d it myself with a can of £14 sherwood green paint. All in it was under £400 and it’s a solid go to bass for me. I look at ‘better on paper’ jazz basses but ultimately I know my limitations as a player and few folk would tell the difference in my jazz and a ‘real’ fender or other brand.

Cool looking bass that! I've had many a squire. Great basses. Particularly loved an early year precision I had for my first bass. Late eighties or early nineties made. Kept going back to it over much more expensive fenders for gigs!

USA fender Highway One body secondhand- 120

Seymout Duncan Rickenbacker pick ups - under 100 (cant remember exact price!)

Schaller 3D bridge - about 50

Hipshot tuners about 40

Stellartone tonestyler duo 6 plate - under 100

Thats a status P neck, but its off now and i may pop a Maple with black blocks or get a status Jazz - decent neck £1-300

Routing and body work - free coz i did it!

It’s the nuts and i really need to pop a neck on it again - you can do real quality very reasonable

This was an early run of the CV’s great value if you can find one at a good price. I’ve seen lots of the P’s selling above the original price. I guess they were that good?

I think probably the one I particularly loved was considered not a great era for squire, being Korean made, I think. I thought it sounded great however. Got to say I've played a few of the recent squires and I've been seriously impressed!
