Hayman 40/40 bass.

My cousin Gary taught me the rudiments of playing on his 40/40 in 1978.
He also had the equivalent 30/30 guitar he used in his pub band. Both were in natural finish.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Haymans and Shergolds. Bought a black Marathon in ‘79 as my first ‘proper’ bass.

I have a blond 4040. It weighs circa 10lb. I was looking to change one of the pickups. but found they're both mounted on a large metal plate like a stretched humbucker. It looked like they were a 'whole thing'. I don't know how the plate 'works' but assume it's part of the overall sound somehow?

Been offered a 40/40. Not played one, but looks interesting. Are they built well? I see on here that someone commented that the pups let them down.
I’m after an unusual (not fender basically, but not a flash) bass for a band project, and the hayman looked unusual.

I had one.  Built like tanks, almost as heavy.  Wide neck, weak pickups.  The bridge is perspex - mine had cracked and back then I was lucky enough to get NOS, I'm not sure that would be possible now.  Plus all that groovy 70s smoked perspex scratchplate etc.  But for sure interesting and unusual.  If it isn't outrageously expensive - and it seems they are creeping up steadily in value - probably worth having a try as you could almost certainly move it on at no loss.

Cheers Paul, it’s a lined fretless and I can send it back at sellers expense, so could be worth a punt.
What was it about the pups? Are they replaceable?

They seemed to me to be rather thin and weedy.  Not sure if there would be a drop in for anything else but I am sure they could be rewound to your liking if everything else fell into place.
