Keeping it down a bit

Just briefly skimming through before I nod off...

If it hasn't  been mentioned , have you considered ceiling speakers ?
You could play your bass through  an audio interface which then gets connected to them..

Also handy for your tv/ hifi etc..

Regarding errors : years ago when living with my parents I was wide awake at about 2.30 in the morning . I decided to crank my headphones full blast for a session listening to merciful fate.  Mum came in politely , and advised me that it may be a bit loud.

I realised that the  place was virtually shaking as the headphones were not fully plugged into my stereo .
I'll leave it there ...😼

I’m out of TLRTs but 😂

And at least you’d know what time it was; “Half past two in the bloody morning! Turn it down!!”

Etc.

I've done similar when I got my Ashdown B Social amp. You plug in headphones and it doesn't cut the speakers automatically, well who knew?

Everyone in the house and next door it turns out. 😄

There's a chance that we'll be moving house soon and the property we've seen is a nice big semi-detached.

Weirdly, given how often we've moved, we've never before lived anywhere with neighbours the other side of a party wall so my concern is that practicing at moderate volumes is likely to cause annoyance. Plus, Mrs S plays (acoustic) piano and that can get some volume to it when she's in full Rachmaninoff mode.

Any advice on how to set things up to prevent noise leakage into next door? The property is about a hundred years old and pretty substantial. The only option for "The Music Room" (as we shall grandly call it whenever we get chance) is on the side of the house with the party wall although speakers and the piano can be placed around the room, away from the shared wall itself.

I'm not talking about late night sessions - just practice and playback at sensible volume during the day.

Am I worrying too much? Should I consider some sort of isolator to put a cab on to decouple the bass from the floor?

It depends on the neighbour's tolerance but if you share a wall, they'll be able to hear it. Try to use a room that's not directly adjacent, but based on the layout you may still want to watch your volume sometimes. Besides that, I would talk to them very early on to let them know that you like to play bass and will try to not bother them, but because it's a new place for you and not familiar how sound travels there to please let you know if there's any noise leaking. People tend to be friendlier when you approach them like that.

Your answer to your problem is this..https://www.travisperkins.co.uk/thermal-insulated-plasterboard/british-gypsum-gyproc-thermaline-basic-insulated-wallboard-plasterboard-tapered-edge-2400mm-x-1200mm-x-30mm/p/752767.

Simply line the party wall with this insulated plaster board.

Dont know what you're like at DIY,but it is relatively an easy job.

Use 20 mm batons and screw them to the wall, you dont even have to strip the wall paper  just baton over existing, stick the plaster board onto the batons using this stuff..https://www.screwfix.com/p/soudal-fix-all-high-tack-adhesive-sealant-white-290ml/64585?tc=YA4&ds_kid=92700.

Get hold of some ready mixed polyfiller and fill the joint lightly sand and then seal the joints.

Paint with emulsion, then cross line .and then wallpaper .

I did this with my party wall and believe me it works,i never hear a peep out of my neighbours now, apart from when he's peering over the garden fence ogling the wife

Haha. I really don’t - I just want to practice at a sensible volume. I’m not a guitarist 😁

I like the bookcase idea. Fortunately, I have some of those!

Hide the rockwool between the bookcase and the wall: happier everyone!

For a fun decoupling project look up 'tennisball platform'.

I’ve lived in an end terraced cottage for the last 25 years. My neighbours children (and mum too) play a piano as much as possible. As I was made to WFH during Covid, it became impossible to concentrate. I got a soundproof specialist to ask if he could help. At £3500 a wall (3 in all) it made it a very expensive. I asked him what he would do as the piano playing was evident when he visited, hearing the noise through the wall, he said ‘Move’. Took his advice and now plan to move away. How my neighbour lacks empathy and respect goes beyond belief. I hope the people who buy this place do not show the respect that we clearly have, to been treated as we have. Good riddance

Feel your pain. We lived in an end terraced Victorian house where the neighbour’s son played a full acoustic

drum kit every night. Eventually had to threaten them with council intervention, following which they never

spoke to us for years. They were a nightmare family - 4 teenage kids, grandma and both parents living in

a small house. We eventually moved to a cottage in a quiet village, where we’ve settled so well in a

peaceful environment with lovely neighbours all around.
