What, in your opinion, is the minimum 'gold standard' BPM a bassist needs to sustain in order to be acceptable/respectable?

New Romantic!

What if a person is into Disco?

The 'gold medal' disco tune is Dancing Queen. Which was influenced by Jive Talkin'.

So you're looking at 100-104 BPM.

Well if you are fan of movie soundtracks and don't play with a pick, then to be a respected professional you will need a Goldfinger capable of playing to 104 BPM...

How about we adjust the question slightly.

"What!!!? In YOUR opinion"!! ! Is the minimum BPM "gold standard"? A bassist needs to sustain in order to be acceptable/respectable!

This is true, but I believe the ability to be competently busy, to a realistic standard, is key to all round versatility

Never been asked how fast I can play during any audition.

This thread has put a big smile on my face and stopped me from going to bed when I really should have. Well done all. Some classic material in here.

I've got my own ideas on this but it would be interesting to see other people's opinions on this momentous, foundation subject.

That is the minimum finger/plectrum string strikes per minute across all/any notes on the fretboard.

That is insanely hard to do.

To give the OP a serious reply:

I still love me a bit of shred. I can't play as fast as I used to be able to, although if I practised nothing but shred for 2 hours a day for the next 3 months I would probably get up to speed (see what I did there ;) ) but at my time of life I'm not prepared to do that.

The point is, I could shred faster than than the tempo of 'Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick', yet I found HMWYRS far more challenging to learn. So IMO it's not about the bpm's it's what you can do with them.
