I expect they're all busy putting the finishing touches to the new website.

Nah! The website is deliberately a balls up to get you to go in there in person and buy something you hadn't realized you need badly 😂

I bought a bass from them a couple of weeks ago. Took a few tries to get through on the phone as it was engaged, but I got through within about half an hour of the first try. The whole email exchange that followed to finalise the purchase (details -> invoice -> payment confirmation -> shipping link) can't have taken more than 15 mins back-and-forth. The tracking went weird overnight so I emailed in the morning to ask whether it had actually gone out and, again, got a response back in minutes apologising that the courier simply hadn't turned up so it was still waiting along with various other packages. I thanked them for the update and they thanked me (kinda unnecessarily in a pure business sense) for my understanding. The bass arrived the next day.

So, no problems as of a couple of weeks ago.

Well they've just teased us on the weekly email with some screenshots of the new webpage, so it really is coming! Ye of little faith......

It still won’t get the bass weights right.

3.6 kg is apparently 8lb, 9lb2 and 7.5lb

I refer you to the clothes sizing thread, from which they’ve clearly taken inspiration!

I bought a bass and paid for it this morning via the website.  14 hours later I am yet to receive even an order acknowledgement email which is disappointing to say the least.

I have to say, that is unusual in my experience. Everything I have bought I've had a receipt for promptly. Are you sure there wasn't a typo with your e-mail?

I was driving reasonably close by for a gig last Saturday with money for a Sadowsky Metro. I rang and rang to check it was in stock but couldn't get through on the phone despite them apparently being open. Didn't go in the end. Anyone else have issues with the phone number, or is it wrong online?

It's a small staff. Maybe they were all serving customers.

It wasn't even connecting, it just said they couldn't take my call. For an hour. So I doublechecked phone numbers. It said open 10-2 but I wanted to check stock before I went out of my way to drive there.

I am still amazed that people would be a bass online from a shop like Bass Direct or the Bass Gallery, etc instead of ringing them up and doing the deal over the phone! If you have to buy in that way then I would suggest Thomann or someone similar, who's business is geared up to that. You could buy a bass online from BD while someone is trying it out in the shop, or are on the phone to buy it. They won't be checking the website in real time and the guy on in the shop (or on the phone) will walk away with the bass!

A couple of years ago, I was interested in buying a cab on the Bass Gallery site. So obviously I rang them up , only to find that they had sold it six months ago and hadn't got round to taking down from the website! It only takes a phone call...

No good if they're not answering the phone though.

If BD don't want to sell stuff from their web site, then they shouldn't have an "Add to Cart" button next to any of the items.

I wonder what the legal situation would be if someone had bought and paid for a bass through their website, but because that hadn't been checked BD then sold it to someone else actually in the shop. Since for the instruments you are supposedly buying the actual example shown and not just one of several in stock it might be a tricky issue for BD.

If they can't do the deal online, get rid of the online part. Unless my life depends on it, I am not ringing anyone.

I am still amazed that companies in the 21st century can't function online.

Why would you be so adverse to speaking to someone on the phone?

When it comes down to it, Bass Direct is an old school bricks & mortar shop providing a specialist service to a niche market (in fact, a niche part of an already niche market). It's target customers are generally people (like me) who appreciate the personal touch and are happy to discuss a potential purchase and any possible alternatives before we buy an expensive bass / amp / whatever. If you want something generic then you can probably save a few quid buying online from Thomann, who are great at what they do. But Bass Direct and the Bass Gallery, etc are a different thing and offer a different service...

Perhaps worth keeping in mind that they're probably kinda running TWO websites in parallel right now.

And it's NAMM week, so I guess that may have some impact too.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that BD are more of a two-man operation than a Tho-mann operation [waits for applause].

Because I absolutely can't stand talking on the phone and will do anything to avoid it. Which is why the internet is such a fantastic thing. I am sure you will find it is a lot more common than you realise.

Its not really an issue, I don't expect anyone to cater to my problems, but if they don't I am happy to go elsewhere.

Must make getting gigs and dealing with agents, other band members, etc difficult...

I'm similarly phone adverse.

In my case I don't need to deal with agents promotors etc for getting gigs as there is someone else in the band (our singer) who is much better at this than I would ever be. All inter-band communication between gigs and rehearsals is done by group text and email. Works very well.

Absolutely doesn't. I don't do the bookings, the singer and guitarist do that. I do all the PA and stuff. We talk on whatsapp mostly although not so bad ringing them as I know them.

At home my wife does all phone related things. So no, it doesn't generally make anything difficult.
