Murph_Orpheus
Right I realise theres probably like a bazillion threads(maybe an exaggeration ) on this kinda thing, but I'm looking to achieve a mix of these kind of tones. Dick Lovgren of Meshuggah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6VerKdcrOQ - Bass comes in at 0:30 Rex Brown's tone that he's had on recent Down albums http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzt52ZsoVy8 Both are very gritty and aggressive tones. It sounds like the treble is up to the gills on both but I'm not quite sure. I should be able to get somewhat of a similar tone, I run my Spector Euro 5LX through a Mesa Big Block and Sansamp RPM for overdrive as I didnt like the overdrive on the Big Block. I've fiddled about a bit with settings but cant quite get that sound, anyone have any ideas? Any help is much appreciated
thisnameistaken
Ampeg? Sounds like an overdriven SVT to me.
Protium
If possible blend a lot of uneffected signal into the distortion pedal. Boosting treble on the bass (also if possible ) would probably help.

I'm running it through the input of my Mesa and using an on/off footswitch to go between the 2 for seperate clean and overdrive sounds. I do plug direct into the Sansamp though so I'll try the blend trick later. And boost more treble and see how I get on
vegas_hooker
Loud amp with muchos drive, new strings on humbuckers with and a pick. Probably actives. Rex Brown uses a lot of speaker combinations in the studio as well as custom/home made pedals and 'adjusted' amps. Most likely blends two rigs when recording. dannybuoy
Meshuggah - EBS Fafner and a Line6 POD are what he uses apparently

Dan_Nailed
MXR M-80 will get a very close tone to that, both IME and on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv3baLNG-10 Warning, the guy in the video is a redneck. Rex Brown also uses the M80, his "settings" are in the back of the manual. I'm not saying it'll be the answer to your question but it'll get you a chunk of the way. ARGH
SansAmp....Smidge of chorus... I dont like Rex's tone though...Todd Stranges was better to my ears with Down. Edited March 26, 2009 by ARGH
