These look like a great idea, a stiff absorbent plastic foam shaped like a jack plug. At £6 plus postage for 5 they can be used several times each. I wouldn't be happy using a cotton bud as the cotton can catch on metal contacts especially as  you can't see from the outside, much safer to just use a jack plug. These would just add a bit of wiping action.

The only problem is they don't seem to have UK availability at the moment, Amazon won't ship to the UK. You could order direct from Australia I guess.

I wish I'd had these in the past to attack all the dodgy sockets on certain guitarists pedal boards :)

This little helper is quite (quite because it doesn't clean switching contacts) a good idea, but I think he's living alone as his wife would have killed him after putting a lot of WD-40 on the kitchen table ! 🤦‍♂️

And make your plug even more sensitive to corrosion... 😉

You have a point there. While 1200 is ultra fine grit it is still removing some metal and can break through any surface finish. 'Burnishers' are indeed sold for pro audio use but come with advice to use them as infrequently as possible. Cleaning solution wise I recommend IPA (alcohol not beer 🙂 ) first to degrease then a Caig DeOxit product for oxidisation / corrosion.
