Huw Foster Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 (edited) Hi! Thought I should post my transcriptions here, and update it whenever I do a new one. Transcriptions All created for personal use and tuition, with a few commissions too. Some of the older ones are a little less consistent in quality and appearance, so I'm going through those and updating them when I get the chance. Edited October 7, 2023 by Huw Foster 1 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted April 1, 2021 Author Posted April 1, 2021 New transcription and video: Chaka Khan - 'We Can Work It Out' [notation / tab] Video: 4 Quote
Huw Foster Posted April 14, 2021 Author Posted April 14, 2021 New transcription: The Jacksons - 'This Place Hotel' (a.k.a. 'Heartbreak Hotel') [notation / tab] Bass by Nate Watts I did a video for this one 10 years ago, when I still had hair (just). A student requested it a transcription, so I've revisited it. At the time of the video I thought that the original bassline was played in drop D, although it could conceivably be in Eb, which is how Nate Watts tends to tune his bass. It's hard to tell on the recording - there could be the occasional low D? Anyway, that's how I've transcribed it, but feel free to try in Eb! Quote
Huw Foster Posted May 1, 2021 Author Posted May 1, 2021 New transcription: Anderson .Paak - 'Tints' [notation / tab] Original synth bass by Pomo (I think) Video: 1 1 Quote
TKenrick Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 This was on my to do list but you beat me to it (and saved me the effort!). Those instrumental albums on Spotify are pure gold, so many bassy delights. 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted May 7, 2021 Author Posted May 7, 2021 New transcription Prince - 'Let's Work' [notation / tab] Bass by Prince, of course Another student request! Been meaning to dive into this one for a while. How dare one man be so funky! 1 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted May 9, 2021 Author Posted May 9, 2021 (edited) Jamiroquai - 'Runaway' Orignal bass by Paul Turner Video with gear runthrough: Edited July 12 by Huw Foster Quote
Huw Foster Posted May 27, 2021 Author Posted May 27, 2021 Santana feat. Dave Matthews - 'Love of My Life' [notation / tab] Original bass by Benny Rietveld I hadn't heard this one until I had a request to transcribe it. Some fun moments - I love the tumbao feel in the outro. All other transcriptions here 2 Quote
Huw Foster Posted June 25, 2021 Author Posted June 25, 2021 (edited) Teena Marie - 'I Need Your Lovin' [notation / tab] Original bass by Allen McGrier. Great bassline! The bass part and the song in general sound to me like something Rick James would write, which makes sense as he was Teena's mentor. Video here, although unfortunately WMG have blocked it in most countries. If you have a VPN, go wild! Edited June 25, 2021 by Huw Foster Quote
Huw Foster Posted June 29, 2021 Author Posted June 29, 2021 We've all heard it a million times, but a student of mine just got a 5-string and I found the isolated bass track. Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars - 'Uptown Funk' [notation / tab] Original bass by Jamareo "Jam" Artis All other transcriptions here Quote
Huw Foster Posted July 4, 2021 Author Posted July 4, 2021 Cory Wong feat. Tom Misch - 'Cosmic Sans' [notation / tab] Original bass by Cory himself. A few overdubs, so in the transcription and the video I've collated everything into one part. All other transcriptions here Quote
Huw Foster Posted July 5, 2021 Author Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Lizzo - 'Juice' [notation / tab] Not sure who the original bass player is! Two people credited on the album, so it's either Nate Mercereau, Ricky Reed, or both! Short video here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ9F1gMnyb2/ Edited October 19, 2021 by Huw Foster Quote
Huw Foster Posted July 7, 2021 Author Posted July 7, 2021 Rudimental feat. John Newman - 'Feel The Love' [notation / tab] Original bass: Renell Shaw (breakdown only - the rest is programmed synth) Decided to transcribe this one as it's a request at a wedding I'm playing this week. Synth interpreted for bass guitar with octave pedal and other FX for the majority of the song, then clean electric bass for the breakdown. All other transcriptions here 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted July 15, 2021 Author Posted July 15, 2021 John Legend feat. BloodPop - 'A Good Night' [notation / tab] Original bass: Ely Rise (keyboard/programmed) Another wedding request. Tailor-made to be a first dance, which is a bit cynical tbh, but that's how the industry works! Original bass is definitely a virtual instrument played on keyboard, which means some of the jumps are a bit tricky if played on electric. A bit repetitive too... but hopefully other bass players will find this when in need of a quick chart at some point! All other transcriptions here Quote
Huw Foster Posted October 14, 2021 Author Posted October 14, 2021 Coldplay - Adventure of a Lifetime [notation / tab] Original bass: Guy Berryman Had to learn this one for a gig. Although the bassline remains almost the same throughout, there's that one fill that sounds a bit like Bernard Edwards. Transcriptions archive Quote
Huw Foster Posted October 19, 2021 Author Posted October 19, 2021 The Meters - People Say [notation / tab] Original bass: George Porter Jr. Love this tune. A lesson in understated funk. My go at it is slightly less understated, but it's just so fun to fill over! Transcriptions archive 3 Quote

Huw Foster Posted January 9, 2022 Author Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) Been a while since my last transcription! Here's a classic that's been done many times. However, I just wasn't happy with the quality of some of the transcriptions I could find out there, so when a student requested this one, I quickly put together my own transcription. Queen - Another One Bites The Dust [notation / tab] Original bass: John Deacon Transcriptions archive Edited January 9, 2022 by Huw Foster 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 Updated an old transcription! Now available in standard notation and tab (and corrected some errors). Jamiroquai - Mr Moon [notation / tab] Original bass: Stuart Zender Transcriptions archive Quote

Thanks for taking the time and effort Huw, great work😎 Thanks! I look a bit different these days, haha. 👴🏻 My P-bass (still the only I've had) is a Fender Classic 50s vibe*, bought from this very forum in 2010 I think. It's probably my most recorded bass, every engineer I've worked with has loved it. *Is that the model? I can't find it online anymore. It's Mexican-made, and was highly sought-after at the time - I think they were mostly made around 2007. 1 Quote
Huw Foster Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 A Patreon request! Hadn't heard this smooth jazz tune before. Bass sounds like it's synthesised, maybe using a Fairlight or something similar? Transcribed for 5-string, but I did a 4-string version if anyone wants it - just let me know. Sherry Winston - 'Love Mission' [notation / tab] Original bass: Eddison “Elektrik” Sainsbury Transcriptions archive Quote
Huw Foster Posted February 1, 2022 Author Posted February 1, 2022 Another Patreon request! Great bass playing on this one. Again, this one is for 5 string. Incognito - 'Good Love' [notation / tab] Original bass: Julian Crampton Transcriptions archive 2 Quote
