markdavid
Have been thinking about getting a Harley Benton Beat Bass http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_beatbass.htm and the HARLEY BENTON HBP90BK http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbp...scale_ebass.htm as I think the Beatbass would sound awesome with some Tapewounds on it and the HBP90BK has an awesome vintage look and would probably be killer with some upgraded pickups , and the shortscale would give a good old school thump to the sound (once pick ups upgraded) Any one owned either of these basses? Any thoughts , suggestions etc . All comments welcome
Oxblood
You're not the first one to have asked this question. I think that the general opinion among those who own or have tried them is that the HB basses are very nice for the money. Have a look at this thread. AcidBass is very pleased with his. The Burpster
I'm sure for what they cost, they are capable...... But I ask of you, why? You've already got into 'upgrading for better effect' (ie the SDs in your Squire) I see this as a backward step.....(as soon as you get them, you'll want to spend X upgrading pups and bridges etc) Might I be bold enough to suggest, save your £200 and save the rest towards your first Fender Highway One..... I'm no tonewood expert but that doesn't sound like a good starting point for an upgrade project.
Rich
Well it does have a solid top. Anyway, I doubt very much that tonewood will be much of an issue on a violin bass strung with tapewounds!
OutToPlayJazz
Have you thought of getting the "proper" Hofner one? I've got the Contemporary series one & only paid £300 for it, instead of the £500 list price. If you want the contact, PM me

OutToPlayJazz
Both MIM & MIJ are great basses. The MIM is a very fast and well made instrument these days & the MIJ moreso. If you can stretch to it, save up for a MIJ Geddy Lee. The gloss finish (even slimmer than usual) neck is astounding. Strangely, I've played 3 USA jazzes this past week & they all feel inferior to the other two. A much bigger effort to play IMO Definitely not worth the extra outlay. They are both (Mex and Jap) very good instruments and, in no way be put off by them because they are not 'made in America' ... QC at both areas of production is as good (and if I dare put my head above the parapet) if not better than the US. I very nearly bought a MIM Frank Bello sig Pbass and I found it be excellently made. Jap Fenders are as good as other Jap makes, Yamaha, Ibanez etc so 'nuff said about that!!!!! You'll be fine going with MIJ or MIM as long as it fits you, the music you play and your wallet....
