I see a Jeff Scheff 4 string appeared on the UK bass player market on FB.

Decent price seeing as they’re fairly rare. Shame that the aftermarket scratchplate is screwed on, would look better in its original state without one.

Cracking colour!

I acquired one a few years ago. It proved difficult to sell on this forum when I decided to move it on, but found an appreciative buyer eventually.

I had a 5-string Jerry Scheff a few years back. Very pretty and lovely to play, but the pickups were thin sounding to my ears, even with the assistance of the preamp, so I moved it on. Like you experienced, it took a while to sell.

They’re a very specific flavour of bass, not overly popular I guess (hence the relatively few numbers), but a very dedicated fan club on TB.

pickups v widely spaced!

Did that contribute to an inherently scooped sound with both pickups on full? The Cort Jeff Berlin Rithimic V I've noticed also has pickups in two separate postcodes and I've wondered the same.

Think I felt like Sibob that the sound was a little undistinguished . Preferred my Fender Jazz, so it went. But to be fair I never took it out of the house, scared to damage it! Lovely looker.

You may well be describing a massive midrange scoop. It might have sounded even more undistinguished in a live mix.
