So, say I was gonna mod a bass to have a pickup that was under a veneer... I will be having the pup magnets the same distance from the strings as they are now, is there a maximum thickness before i start loosing tone/freqs/resonance?

They look good until the finish begins to go on them!

Not to hand... but you notice on pickups that if you play over them, over time they turn shiny? Well... your lacquer isn't as strong as plastic...

I don't get why people cover the pickups... pickups are pickups... why disguise the fact? But then again, each to their own.

Here's one I used to have - the colour in the flesh was very striking!

As for your question about pickup distance etc - I would think a thin veneer would be best to allow maximum adjustability. Try putting your pickups right down low and see if it makes a difference at the moment.

veneers are generally only 0.6 mm thick so I can't see how they would make any difference to the sound if you onlt use 1 or 2. or if your good with tools you could make a replacement cover for the pickups out of your prefered wood.
