I'm not a tapper or a slapper, so have sometimes opted for foam under the strings at the bridge to emulate an upright sound... I seem to remember that the old Electra Outlaw bass I owned (wish I still had it) that, along with plug-in sound modules, had adjustable mutes on the bridge.
