TheGreek
This has been discussed many times before - who actually made the first bass guitar? Article: Edited June 1, 2021 by TheGreek
kodiakblair
Old news to me. My pal ,Rick Wilson (Moonshine Guitars), did the restoration work on the Tutmarc hanging in Seattle's Pop Museum.

Bassassin
Not a 'bass guitar' per se, but Tutmarc's bass fiddle is unquestionably the first electric bass, fretted, & intended to be played more like a guitar than a double bass. It wasn't a spectacular success but it would seem wildly improbable that Leo wasn't aware of it.
OllyW
A member on TalkBass owns one of them, he talks about buying it and other Tutmark guitars and amps in this thread.
kodiakblair
@OllyW I've a hazy memory that the TB Tutmarc owner also has the first P-bass to roll off the production line.
OllyW
Just now, kodiakblair said: @OllyW I've a hazy memory that the TB Tutmarc owner also has the first P-bass to roll off the production line. Yeah, there's a photo in that thread of his Tutmarc alongside the first bass that was sold by Fender, not sure if it was the first one made though. He's also got at least another six 1951 P basses in his collection.

Hellzero
And here is my mémoire, in French, about the subject (origin of guitars and basses) written some 20 years ago. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MH6uXdr4PAOTlt9h-vh1aVaeeYCTSfPj/view?usp=drivesdk
