It sounds like a P bass, played superbly,Ā recordedĀ in anĀ expensive studio and produced by someone who knew what they were doing. As for re-creating that sound live, howĀ much do you want to spend?

I agree. P bass. Tone rolled off a little. Probably straight into the board. Bit of compression.Ā
Ā

maybe, just maybe some light muting going on. A lightweight and narrow bit of foam maybe.Ā

Dynasty, Shalamar, Lakeside, The Whispersā€¦Ā all came out of the Solar Records stable soĀ itā€™ll beĀ Leon Sylvers again on bass and production.

In fact pretty much exactly the same musicians involved all round Iā€™d guess,Ā including the fantastically named Wardell Potts Jnr on drums.

Iā€™m not hearing a P bass - I think itā€™s a stingray with flats.Ā

I concur. There's definitely something Rayish going on in that tone.

Leon Sylvers played a Rickenbacker most of the time if the internet is to be believed. Beast of a producer/bass player.Ā

Someone on talkbass said he see him live and he was playing a Rick 4001 with flats and mutes onĀ

Thatā€™s definitely Leon bass duties there. Superb.

Shows you donā€™t have to be Prog to rock a Rick! Very cool pic!

Dynasty was the Solar Recordsā€™ houseĀ band butĀ also had hits of their own. They actually released some new material late last year that was up to date but still had ā€˜that soundā€™.

I think this is one of those cases where the sound is more about his technique than the bass itself per se. So I'd say any bass, probably with flats, with a middly EQ will sound pretty close if you can get that style under your fingers.

[Edit]: Just remembered that I saw this video the other day which should be helpful

To hell with what bass he's playing, I just can't wait to tell my band that we'll be doing synchronised dance steps while we play our next pub ...
