Bass Culture
Hmm, sounds a bit like a semi-acoustic type bass of some description played with a plectrum to me. But I suspect I'm likely to be wrong...

For me, some of the most awesome bass parts recorded belong to Tangerine Dream, with no bass (and no attempt to sound like one) in sight….

Because if bass guitarists don't fly the flag for using human bass players who will? There are some awesome synth bass lines out there (Funkin for Jamaica immediately springs to mind) but the above Jake Bugg tune is one which clearly sounds like electric bass yet the bass player has been cut out of the picture. In a post some time back I complained about the Tower of Power gig I attended having no bass player (last minute sickness). Some on here were saying that if none of the punters notice then does it matter? Bass guitarists should defend our role and highlight the value we add to music. I suppose, following this 'logic', synth players should be replaced by string and brass sections, maybe choirs, too..? A very high percentage of what I compose is done using virtual instruments, including bass. It's well beyond my skills to actually play the bass lines I write. I'm a drummer; I use drum software more than I play acoustic or e-drums. Welcome to the twenty-first century. Bach, Mozart and Schubert would have loved it..! My oldest lad informs me that 'Tom Robertson' has played Bass in Jake Bugg's band for about six years, so there's a good chance it might be him. I must say, I really dislike the sound of that blokes voice. In fact, it Bugs me...

I do not think that synth players should be replaced with anything. Synth players can produce sounds that non- electronic instruments can't and are a specialism in their own right. But if it was a choice between my Bach being performed by a synth player or by an orchestra I'd chose the latter. Whatever your view is as a drummer/ composer that is fine but on a forum which is supposedly for people who love bass guitars I find it surprising that I'm having to argue that, as amazing as today's music production software is, good quality live bass guitar is better than programmed, and that the role of the bass guitar in live music should be cherished and promoted.
diskwave
Autotune?..auto this, auto that...what gets me is that I bet he's probably quite good live with a guitar around his neck so why process the living daylights out of the record.....ugh....Lets hear some fluffs, maybe a slightly outta tune guitar, tempo wander..some space around everything...ha. Well I play bass as my first instrument, but as a writer first I don’t care any more about the bass than any other instrument. It’s just that, an instrument, one of many, there to serve the music.

My daughter knows some of his mates, not sure if she knows him. He is a pretty capable musician (and he's been known to do Neil Young songs), I'd listen to him over Ned Sheeran any day 🙂

Sparky Mark
I reckon you could get this tone (or very very close) with a pick, P bass with TI Flats through a Tech 21 VT bass pedal.
Lozz196
Yep, from what I heard it sounded very "classic Precision/Ampeg/flats". Not a fan of Mr Bugg, mainly due to his voice, but the music of his band always sounds good.
Sparky Mark
Jake's voice is so distinctive that I guess it's inevitable he'll be one man's meat and another's poison. I actually like his songs a lot and his voice suits them perfectly for me.
