DrVet
I had a SB 705 once...it was surely a Shine Bass, it had a nice walnut top, ash body, rosewood fingerboard, maple neck...it seemed almost a thumb copy body to me. The bass was rebranded, as I've heard the seller's story: He met with the koreans at some music expo in Germany, and he took 50 items to sell them in Romania, in his music shop...but he asked the koreans to rebrand the basses "MANNON" (it was his wife's name ) but it was a good bass...paid almost 300 euros for it....at that time, and it seemed like a pro bass to me. Pour electronics dought...active preamp that will literally eat a battey in a few days of reharsals. Other than that....it was a nice bass. F. Bassassin
If RIC sniff that one, they'll get them shut down!
Will they 'eck as like. Despite all their puffing & ranting, it seems RIC have zero jurisdiction over anyone other than US importers & US based auction sites. Even John Birch in the UK have been knocking out Rick copies since the early 70s, & RIC don't - or maybe can't - bat an eyelid. Saein & other Korean & Chinese factories make plenty of them & even the classic JapCrap stuff like Fernandes & Greco was still around in the 90s, for the home market. Anyway, the Shine Rickalikes are about the best of the current copies, that's an old pic, current ones have accurate headstocks, nearly full-width inlays, and they come in some quite attractive colours: http://www.tiptop.se/cgi-bin/multipage.cgi?id=2522 http://www.tiptop.se/cgi-bin/multipage.cgi?id=2525 These have Seymour Dunks as standard, and presumably Saein got tired of waiting for RIC to redesign the original bridge so it worked - so they went & did their own. pricechris10
I have a Shine 5 string ( SBT 705 N ). ( Korean built ) The bridge pup sounds a bit weak but the overall playability and tone is ace! The string spacing suits me and the overall feel of the bass is really nice! Through neck through strung well put together! Overall a very nice bass for the money! Don't be put off by them being affordable, but I would recommend a visit to the shop and trying them out before buying! I bought mine from Ebay and was lucky to not be disappointed! Hope this helps!
