With traditional (123 year old) walls, I use 6mm Rawlplug brand plugs, dipped in Gorilla glue.

1 smooth plugs are useless on walls with friable mortar under plaster.

2 once a hole has opened up its probably too late.

3 don't overtighten, you must not make the fixing twist.

4 Use heavier gauge screws, 4 or 5mm.

6 give several hours for the glue to expand and consolidate.

No, I never tried the glue thing. Never had any problem.

Actually not true, once I used screws that were way too short and it fell out, but all the rest of them have been here for over a decade and not had an issue, and that includes some of the long reach ones.

I do however have an inspection ever year or so to see if anything is looking odd, no issues yet
