Stub Mandrel Posted December 29, 2021 Author Posted December 29, 2021 With traditional (123 year old) walls, I use 6mm Rawlplug brand plugs, dipped in Gorilla glue. 1 smooth plugs are useless on walls with friable mortar under plaster. 2 once a hole has opened up its probably too late. 3 don't overtighten, you must not make the fixing twist. 4 Use heavier gauge screws, 4 or 5mm. 6 give several hours for the glue to expand and consolidate. 1 Quote
theyellowcar Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 Thanks everyone. Haven’t done the plugs dipped in glue trick before but seems like a no brainier. Quote
Woodinblack Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 No, I never tried the glue thing. Never had any problem. Actually not true, once I used screws that were way too short and it fell out, but all the rest of them have been here for over a decade and not had an issue, and that includes some of the long reach ones. I do however have an inspection ever year or so to see if anything is looking odd, no issues yet Quote
Doctor J Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 You shouldn't need glue if the plug and screw are sized correctly for the hole they're in. Back on topic, they're close together in colour to the naked eye, the camera exaggerates the difference a bit. 2 Quote

My last two houses have had walls with a thick layer of 'vintage' plaster, which greatly benefits from some form of 'binder'. Quote
