I cannot conceive that a bass made of standard materials and construction can possibly weigh in a 26lbs! I did play a horrible '70s Fender Jazz that was about 16lbs once, believe me, that thing felt so heavy as to be almost ungiggable. 12lbs is very heavy for a bass so I reckon all these people are wrong, and I'm right :)

Weirdly not only do they review very heavy basses, they now price things in Euros- see the article about the Bass Centre Leo Lyons retro bass.
Has that nice Mr Cameron limited our EU budget contribution but in exchange been forced to accept the Euro as our currency, or do BGM know something we don't........?

Good stuff mate.

Although a bit pointless because I know I must be right and everyone should believe me :)

Yeah, it'll be the shipping weight. I sent out my reasonably heavy StingRay5 on Friday ( :) ), and it weighed in at 13kg all cased and packed up.

I emailed the editor and told him about it! Also mentioned that the photos they used are of a BB2024x - you can clearly see the difference in body shape and the "CRAFTED IN JAPAN" on the headstock as well as the dead giveaway, "BB2024X". Surely someone should pick up on this stuff; a bass weighing nearly two stone!! Even someone manly enough to own a 400+ and a 1516 would balk at that kinda weight!

Man thats slack, too slack. I didnt catch the 'crafted in Japan' pic, though i have only read it through once whilst walking back from town. But they should have seen it surely.

I still get BGM, but it doesn't fell that long ago when they interviewed him last.

Ok, i just checked and it was in the jan/feb 2007 issue, so that's not too bad for them?

I see there is a bass guitar show at Olympia next March. Sounds interesting & possibly worth a day trip to London.

I seem to remember that this was touted by the editorial staff as a readers' Q&A with PT, I wonder what happened to that. Reading between the lines of the interview JK still comes off as massive twat, it seems as if he purposely tries to catch the band out. Maybe I'm wrong but I'd find that wearing.

I heard some of it last year. It was rank to be frank. Really soupy, contrived, over-produced pointlessness. But I hated the self promotion through the mag so I didn't really want to like it.

I have just checked they are the exact same pics that they used for the BB2024X bass test which they did back in January. I thought they looked familliar. Makes you wonder if they really did do a product test at all ??

ps: the weight of that one is marked as 4Kg 8.8 Lb

 • 4 weeks later...

Popped into my local WH Smith's yesterday just to see what mags they had and blow me! They actually had the latest copy of BGM!

It's very occasionally that it makes an appearance in said shop, so being a subscriber I looked forward to getting home and reading my copy (I'd left home early yesterday to go to work before the postie had been) so I got home and...nothing!

Don't get me wrong but all the other mags I subscribe to (Classic Rock, Empire, SFX etc...) all manage to send my copies either before the "proper" issue date or on the day it hits the shops.

I just get the feeling that the mag doesn't treat it subscribers that well, I never get a reminder that my annual subscription is coming to an end and they're always saying you'll get a free set of strings if you renew...well I've done that 4 years in a row and got nada!

Anyway rant over...looking forward to reading it when it DOES arrive...lol!

Yeah this is super annoying and makes you wonder if your subscription has expired. FWIW the website is still listing last month's as the current issue http://bassguitarmagazine.com/index.php?op...&Itemid=101

I look forward with much anticipation to your own highly informative, blemish free, gilt edged, advertising free and presumably also foc publicaion :)

I'm at a loss to think of one specialist (or even generalist) publication that is not imperfect; sorry about the double negative there folks. If it draws a few more people into the fold then good luck to it. I enjoy reading it but have yet to buy any gear just because it was recommended there, I go and try it myself along with some other similar products. Although in my defence I know nothing about anything so I find bits of it quite informative.

I normally enjoy your post silddx but I think you're somewhat off target here.
Just read the latest issue this evening. Only comment is what a bell-end Jeff Berlin comes across as in the letters page!
I thought the original letter writer was just as bad.

The interesting thing in the mag for me was the interview with the new girl from the Smashing Pumpkins (very tidy,by the way). She mentions how Billy Corgan got in touch after her band supported his,and he offered her the gig. So,the whole 'open auditions' via YouTube were bullshit then?

I had better not hear you criticise the government on here, my friend, or even a bass guitar, unless you can build either to a higher standard.

EDIT: I think this thread helped them actually, they have made quite a few improvements, although stupid mistakes still creep in. How's your motor car by the way? Is it perfect? Any criticisms?

:)

I thought both sounded like a pair of twats, but I think Jeff Berlin had a better point.

Just started reading the Wooten interview, HE speaks a LOT of sense.

BUT, I cannot wait for the Scott Thunes interview next month! Great picture of him in the back, I doubt he's lost a shred of attitude.

Mine was waiting on the doormat last night. Best issue for a wihile IMO.

I liked Jeff Berlins response. Yes, he can be abrasive, even arrogant, but he knows it too. I'd like to see him as a guest reviewer. At least you'd know you'd get an honest opinion :)

The only bit that made me cringe was a couple of bits in the compression article - setting a short release on your compressor means the compressor releases your note quickly, not cuts it short grrrr.
