I picked it up today.
I'm always happy to read about someone like Richard Bona, and it's good to
see Dominique Di Piazza and New York Bass Works featured.

Muse again and another Warwick review...doesn't overly interest me anymore.

I hate to admit it...my first thought on reading "Richard Bona again, Chris Wolstenholme again [...] Mark Bedford (hurrah!) and Horace Panter" was "who?" - I honestly have no idea who any of them are. Wolstenholme and Bedford ring a bell, but if you put a gun to my head I still wouldn't be able to say who they are, played with or play for now.
Mark "Bedders" Bedford is the bass player in Madness and has been mentioned as a potential interviewee in this very thread IIRC. I'm guessing they added The Specials' Horace Panter to make into a mini Two Tone special.

I was in Glasgow city centre on monday and in WH Smith`s there was 21 copies of last months BGM and in Breahead (a major shopping venue in the West) there was 13 copies. Don`t think it`s selling too well over this side of the country.
Just had the post delivered, which in itself is amazing, and the latest BGM flopped onto the doormat. Oh dear :) . Richard Bona again, Chris Wolstenholme again, 4 x £1k(ish) upwards basses, one sub £300 (where's the middle ground?). Don't get me wrong I'm sure that Bona and Wolstenholme have their fans, but these guys seem to be on a permanent rota, surely there are enough other "name" players out there warranting some mag space. To be fair there is also an interview with Mark Bedford (hurrah!) and Horace Panter. Editing howler was in the Ed's letter no less referring to the London Jazz Festival details being on page 14, uh uh, page 12 as listed on the contents page. Some new guy attending the institute, so we start with another 12 months of the same "this month I have been mostly....." which we have seen a good few times before, enough already. Still my favourite bass mag and I will keep getting it on subscription, but after the few months of improvement this seems like a small backwards step for me at least, YMMV.
It is improving , seemingly month by month . Especially when you look at some of the early editions . I'm picking mine up tomorrow .

As an aside , I had a look at the latest Bass Player in Smiths (Wolstenholme on the cover) , and there seemed nothing in it .
I used to buy this one all the time , but looking at it now - not worth it .
I ended up buying Guitar and Bass Magazine - always loads of stuff inside of interest - not just bass .

BGM is getting better , you've got to admit it

I haven't been following this thread lately, but I've just received my BGM in the post today.

BGM should stand for Bloody Great Mag. I'm only a few pages in and it's already far more interesting than Bass Player.

No more knocking this mag, folks....please?

Give the guys a break there giving the mag away now!

A 12 month subscription (12 issues posted) costs £30 and includes a free set of DR Hi-Beams, which normally cost £31

Can't say fairer...

sorry but we have to tell it like it is. If it's great we will say so, if not we'll say that.

The thing is we all want a great bass mag, but my reading of the thread suggests improvements have been made, but we are still a fair way from great.

What's the alternative? I think you're asking too much.

Blimey! Things are coming on in the east. You've even learnt to spell. Right that's enough of that. :)

Just picked up the new issue, and the first thing I turned to (having thought it was a pretty interesting idea for a series of articles) was Mike Dimin's "Art of Solo Bass" bit (p.78-9).

My eyes fall to example 3, the little F blues he's written... and those eyes can't make head nor tail of what they're seeing. The time sig says 12/8. Well, there aren't many bars here that look remotely like 12/8 at first glance. Ignoring the pickup, the first two bars are 11/8, then a daring 10/8 (two 5/8 bars combined, by the look of it) in bar 3. Then back to the 11s, and... wait... an actual bar of 12/8 at the Bdim chord.

Having then watched the Youtube video of the lesson, it's pretty clear what's happened (the second note of the first full bar -- and all other notes like it -- should be a crotchet, not a quaver), but it's such a simple mistake that even a brief glance over the stave indicated that something was amiss. It's just a shame that my first glance at this month's issue was a huge c*ck-and-balls of an error.

Yes we can and we can smell, I mean spell, as well. We even get colour tv!

Re lots of copies of last months mag in shop:

I`m not knocking the mag as I buy it every month, there just seemed to be a lot of copies left in the shop. :)

This is what's been really curious about this thread. There seems to be so much sympathy for this magazine, a specialist consumer product, and the people involved in putting it together and publishing it - journalists and publishers. Now, start a thread called "Coldplay" and most, or many, of us will be slagging off a group of massively successful fellow musicians with the most vitriolic profane statements of opinion.

In the WH Smiths in Ealing Broadway and in Westfield (the largest shopping centre in Europe I might add) they are still carrying last months with no sign of the latest issue.

Got the latest issue today - defo. think it is improving but dunno...seems to be the same interview every issue except with a different bass player.

And another thing, can BGM please, please, please stop listing the RRP and put the street price in! No music shop or website ever sells at the RRP anymore.

Depends on what you are including in the measurable area, son - the Metro Centre in Tyneside is the biggest in terms of lettable square footage. Westfield is the biggest 'City Centre' mall but when stacked up against out of town developments it isn't as big (third largest at the mo I think)

That may be, but it's one of the most miserable retail experiences known to humanity. :)

Born 2B Mild yeah that does look real nice....Wonder how it sounds? If you decide you don't like afterall, pass it my way, even if it takes years :)

BGM's got a lot better looking recently but it's still an un-inspiring read and lacking a bit, editorially. They need to get away from doing long drawn out Q+As with players people have never heard of/care about and work up some better editorial features. It needs a bit of attitude in the writing too; a sense of humour, a sense of fun. It still feels a bit cut and paste - esp the news section. The reviews also need a bit of edge to them, it's boring to read 10 paragraphs listing the features on a bass, when I can see what it does by looking at the picture. Tell me if it's any good, if you took it to a gig and got laughed at or got compliments on it, show me how it fits in the back of a hatchback (or doesn't) etc etc. Take a look at What Car - it's a good example of how to make something samey (new car reviews) sound interesting every month.
