Mickyk Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I was watching this video earlier and this guy is recommending D'Addario EXL 170s.I quite like the sound he's getting in the video, but before I go out and buy a set ?Has anyone used them. Quote
TheLowDown Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I'm using them now, and not found any reason not to recommend them. Price is reasonable when they're on sale. I don't know what they're like for slap because I've no intention of ever finding out 3 7 Quote
casapete Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 Been using them for over 20 years now. Great strings, best overall roundwounds I’ve tried. Last a reasonably long time with me, but I’m not too heavy on strings anyway to be fair. Usually buy them when on a deal somewhere, so not crazy expensive either. Strings and Beyond in the USA used to be cheapest for these, but haven’t bought any since before lockdown so not checked the prices. They do them in twin packs too which work out cheaper than buying single sets. 1 Quote
neepheid Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 D'addario nickel roundwounds? Good strings, no brainer choice for me. I can't seem to get my preferred Hartke strings any more, D'addario nickels are the closest I've found to what I like. Never had any trouble with them. Buy with confidence. 2 Quote
TheGreek Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 D'Addario have been really supportive of the Bass Bashes in the past and IIRC gave BC members a discount on the NY line. Good guys - maybe Ped needs to offer them a discount on advertising for a discount on strings for BC members... Quote
BillyBass Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I use EXL165 on my BB, mainly because they come in a twin pack which is quite good value. The 165s have a 105 E string, whereas the 170s have a 100. Apart from that I think they are the same; nickel round wounds. I think they are fine, not better than the DR Sunbeams that I have on my other basses but not any worse either. They are a bit zingy when new, more so I believe than the Sunbeams, but new strings are like that aren't they. 1 Quote

lemmywinks Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 Been using EXL 165-5 for years now, better than the 170 set IMO as the B, E and A strings are a thicker gauge. Quote
NickD Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 Every now and then I try something new because I feel I should... Then I stick a set of D'Addarios back on and wonder why I ever bothered. 2 Quote

I found there was too much of a break in character between the mellow E–A and the lively D–G for me I changed them for a EXL165 set (45•65•85•105) which I much preferred: the A and the D now seemed to have more in common Both times the strings started off with a very bright top and mellowed out before long, losing the jangle without becoming characterless. I wouldn't be surprised if D'Addario made them for Hartke. They make strings for a number of companies, including Fender. I like and use D'Addario. Their Chromes and Ernie Ball Cobalts are my favourites. They last well and feel nice under the fingers. Quote
Nicko Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I rarely buy anything else - EXL 160s 50-105. But I rarely change strings either and find the D'addarios are a bit bright for the first 6 months.😀 1 Quote
acidbass Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I like them - put a set on my Jazz and they are super bright. Not quite as tense as my usual DR Lo Riders which resulted in me raising the action a tad, but a lovely all round tone. 1 Quote
Mickyk Posted August 9, 2021 Author Posted August 9, 2021 Just fitted these on the Yam bb424,they are a different animal to what I'm used to(Chromes Flat wound 50 to 105s) but I'm going to persevere simply because I want to learn to Slapa da Bass properly. Thanks for the replies ,very informative you guys. Quote
tubbybloke68 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Paul Herman uses them on all new Wals unless someone specifically asks for different.when they’re good enough for him then its good enough for me!! 1 Quote
Marvin Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 My go to strings. If I'm feeling a bit tight I might buy some Fender strings, but from what I remember I think D'Addario make Fender strings. I tried Roto's for the first time in years a little while ago, absolutely hated them, so stuck D'Addario's back on. They're consistent and have a good tone. One day I might try a different maker, who knows Quote
Old Horse Murphy Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I always find D'Addario strings just a bit too high tension for me. They're great quality though but I prefer something a wee bit looser Quote
White Cloud Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I like the tone but they always feel a little bit too high tension for my feeble fretting fingers! Quote
Doddy Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I like D'Addario strings. Even though I've been using mostly Bass Centre Elites for years, I usually get a set D'Addario if I need some strings in a hurry, specifically the Pro Steels as I'm not a big fan of nickel strings. They're normally pretty easily available in most shops, aren't too expensive, sound good, and are quality. Quote
chris_b Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I use NYXL's on my jazz bass. They have a long life and retain their range (high end) longer than the DR strings I used to use. Quote
Lozz196 Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 Aside from the Elixirs that I’m currently using I found D’addario Pro Steels the most comfortable steel rounds to play so far. Quote
guyl Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 Another D’addario fan here. Reckon they last well, but even when they “die” they still sound half decent. Have tried others that were also great out of the packet, but when they died they really did die! Quote
Dood Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 D'Addario have been my absolutely go to for years - and their customer support, on the rarest occasions I have needed it has always been brilliant. Oh and don't forget the Player's Circle. Every time you buy D'Addario strings, you earn points that can be put towards buying more strings or accessories. I've had quite a few "free" NYXL sets from the PC just for stringing up my other guitars! https://www.daddario.com/players-circle/ 1 Quote
MM Stingray 62 Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 Great strings I have them on my bb3000 and one of my p basses they both sound great. Quote
