Rich Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Nice interview with David Crosby here. To my shame I've reached my age without ever bothering to familiarise myself with their music. Where's the best place to start? Is there a decent best-of? Quote
fleabag Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Deja Vu album, with Young. Awesome. 5 Quote

Assuming you don't do Spotify, this is a lazy answer but this would be a good starting place: Truth is, if you get the bug it's a bit of a rabbit hole as there's loads of great stuff in both the CSN(Y) and solo catalogues. And plenty of crap (mainly by Nash). Edited September 2, 2021 by wateroftyne 1 Quote
4000 Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Yes, a fan here. I tend to try and start at the beginning and keep going as far as I can. 1 Quote
ezbass Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Hearing 4 Way Street (CSNY live) in my teens turned me onto guitar. Teach Your Children was the first thing I learnt (incorrectly). The first CSN album is a stunning debut and the follow up of Deja Vu, with Neil Young (who I don’t really like) is equally iconic. @wateroftyne says, the best of isn’t a bad place to start. Steven Stills live still remains a firm favourite (he really is a very talented chap). Quote

fleabag Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Nearly missed this ... just vocals. No instruments, and i hear twangs of the Deja Vu album here. Nash is so distinctive Quote
Nail Soup Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Based on a limited sample size : I much prefer Y/Y&CH to CSN/CSNY Open to persuasion though. 1 Quote
wateroftyne Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 My favourite CSNY moment. Four voices, four guitars, nowt else. So pure. And, unbelievably, it's a Nash tune. 1 Quote
fleabag Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Guinnevere from the CSN's debut album. No Young on the first discette Luxury 3 Quote
Count Bassy Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 (edited) Four Way Street is one of my favourite albums. Love the transition from "Find the Cost of Freedom" into "Ohio". Edited September 2, 2021 by Count Bassy 2 Quote
Bassybert Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I’m a huge Neil Young fan so probably being a bit one eyed here but there’s no way any of the others brought as much to the table as he did. Stills was/is a stunning guitar player and singer, whilst Nash and Crosby brought the heavenly harmonies. Although they all contributed songs to the group, without Neil constantly pushing boundaries and raising the standards they wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good without him. 1 Quote

I dunno.. live, maybe. But he’s not on the first album, and his contributions to Deja Vu are limited. The latter two CSNY studio albums are largely execrable. 1 Quote

E sharp Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I used to listen to the original CS&N young album all the time- God like harmonies on that. An old article in Q magazine years ago did make me laugh though. They’d changed CSN&Y, to CRA&P he he. Bit unfair, but I did laugh Quote

E sharp Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I haven’t bought Q magazine for over 20 years now. Unsure if they’re still printing Quote
Old Horse Murphy Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 (edited) Q is no more sadly. At the other end of the CSNY timeline, there's this: the ultimate break-up song written about Mr Crosby. Very sad but very poignant and just an amazing song beautifully performed: Edited September 3, 2021 by Old Horse Murphy Quote

And after reading his autobiog, it’s clear he has a massive chip on his shoulder because of it. But… they’re all flawed people. They’ve all been tosspots at various times through their career. Quote

steantval Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I love this track, it reminds me of my first year at work in 1972, first proper wage and going away with six of my pals boating on the Norfolk Broads for a week that summer, this track and album got played to death on the cassette player taken on board, happy (hippy) times. The energy level went up exponentially when Young came on, and I normally can't stand the guy at all, with a few exceptions here and there. Quote
