Rexel Matador
Hi everyone, sorry this isn't a build diary, but this is where people who know about this kind of thing hang out, so I figured it was the best place for it. Please feel free to have it removed if it's not appropriate... This is my headstock logo: I usually use a custom branding iron, which is fine on lighter finishes. On one occasion for a darker wood, I used the iron to force an impression into the wood, to which I then added metal leaf - not the most hard-wearing solution, it seems: But I want to find a more efficient way of adding headstock logos. Decals are out as I usually finish with oil, so won’t be building up lacquer to hide the edges. And I’m not very experienced at inlaying, so doing that to a high enough standard would probably take longer than making the instrument itself! Does anybody know of anywhere where I could perhaps get the three letters cut from thin aluminium or similar, which could then just be glued on? Or are there any other options I haven’t thought of? Feel free to add links to other threads if this has already been covered. Thanks everyone!!

rubis
I seem to remember some time ago, seeing a build thread on the TDPRI site, where a bloke built a Tele style guitar and then used a Dremel or something similar to route his logo into the headstock. I imagine this produced a similar looking effect to your engraving method. He then filled in the recessed logo with solder, and when fine sanded and polished up, it looked really good. I think he went a step further and tried it out with molten silver, but I to be honest the solder looked just the same. Might be worth experimenting on a bit of scrap? Henrythe8
Iron branding. Good.
PaulThePlug
The impression idea looks good. Back when engineering we used to use a wax type crayon to fill the engraving.. admittedly the pannel was warmed, but you can melt the wax... Jean-Luc Pickguard
I like the effect fender used to use on some of their USA instruments where they use precision cut vinyl in a shiny metallic chrome or gold.

I would imagine if you Google sheet metal laser cutting in your area you'll turn something up. I had my house number cut out of a sheet of mild steel, kept the sheet not the numbers, which has now rusted nicely to how I want it to look. Pretty sure it would work with aluminium.
