Man don't gotta do a lot, dig?

Everybody is talking about these funk monsters... but what about the girls? We've got Meshell Ndegeocello - but who are the real groovers with the feel amongst the ladies?

Rocco is a rare breed... the white dude don't usually have what he got :)

I don't care whether they're male or female, black or white, I'm just naming the ones that really stand out. Meshell is great and has a very distinct vibe but she's not one of the originators, she's part of the next generation. Love how greasy she gets and the go-go feel. Flea is a second generation stand-out because that one Chilis album is so fantastic and his playing on it is as authentic as any brother's. Also nice use of multi-tracked bass, fretted and fretless, non-standard tunings, four and five, effected and even some slapping (though rather unfunkily on that track).

Rhonda Smith can play a bit...
She did some gigs with a guy called Prince.
I think he pays better wages than a Saturday night at the Red Lion.

Great post this one guys...I love funk!

I know most, if not all the bands/bass players, that have been mentioned throughout the entire post and I really enjoy listening to their music but I was also wondering if you guys could recommend more current/contemporary funk, or funk variations, bands.

I really dig bands like Lettuce!, Incognito, Jamiroquai... any more bands out there you'd recommend? Edited by PauBass

Rocco is the king of the 16th note funkology!

Hi

Hell yeah! Why not!

If that's what I like, that's what I like.

As long as it stays fun, that's good enough for me.

Whether the funk police like it or not is irrelevant, I live for me, not others!

Why do you ask?

anything from the acid jazz label is a good start, so Mother Earth, corduroy, james taylor quartet, galliano etc...

A little know band (now defunkt) called DAG, Prince, Spearhead and one of my personal favs - G love and special sauce :)

but for me, still can't beat the original p-funk

There's a band that was described by an indie club (The Water Rats) and a wet jazz club (Jazz After Dark) as London's finest funk quintet. I don't know if that's true (sounds like BS to me) but it's sure fun to play in!

I'd recommend our very own RayFW's band and a band called The Jezebel Sextet for some old school late '60s style funky soul-jazz. Very cool and very cheap to go and see around London and the South East.

In fact, there are a fair few Basschatters playing in funky bands.

That is one goddamn INSANELY funky bassline!

Now, tell me there is no benefit in being able to read music!

Having a social life is over-rated anyway!!!

I am SO excited!!!

D'Angelo - Voodoo

Pino Palladino and Raphael Saadiq laying down the greasiest grooves against ?uestlove's unstoppable backbeat. Revolutionary! The most difficult playing feelwise I've ever come across.
