sprocketflup Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I'm usually a fan of 'non traditional' shapes, but the non reverse thunderbird is a monstrosity. Looks like a melted ice cream tub. 1 Quote

Hellzero Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Weirdly, the all time award winning ugliest bass ever has not been shown. Now it even comes in a colour fitting the shape... When designers have sh*t in their brain, this is what happens. How wrong can a design be ? Check the photo above... 2 1 2 Quote

I actually really like the quirkyness of these. I much prefer them to the standard Music Man. Quote

I still quite like the old Bogseat. That said I've always thought it looks unfinished - a couple of slight changes would give the design a lot more flow & integrity while retaining the shape. And I'd ditch the stoopid scratchplate. 1 Quote

Bongos are stunning instruments on so many levels, I wish I still hand my 5-string one. There's absolutely no way these should be included in a fugly bass thread. 4 Quote

There was a white and gold one on here recently which was simultaneously stunning but also really upped the appearance of a bathroom fitting. They are definitely Marmite. They do sound amazing though and everyone seems to really enjoy playing them. I suspect they are the Stingray’s more able sibling but sadly hit every branch of the ugly tree. Edit: I don’t ever want to play one for this reason as I suspect it would be better than my Stingray and I would have to swap one of the best looking basses ever made for one of the all time fugly basses! rushbo Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 The first time I saw a Bongo (just to clarify, that's the model of bass, not the percussion instrument...) I recoiled in horror. Now, I think I quite like them. I like the way the headstock almost reflects the body shape. That's a nice touch. I wished the knob placement mirrored the curve of the lower bout of the instrument, but I am an ex-art school saddo, which probably completely derails my argument. I'm not sure about colonic irrigation brown sparkle as a colour choice though. 2 Quote
lemmywinks Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Bongos are phenomenal basses that look absolutely awful, tbh I think all 4 string Rays look like bog seats anyway (because they do) so the Bongo is no different in that regard, it's the comically bad body and headstock design that does it for me. Genuinely great basses though, the only Musicman I've got on with in terms of sounds. 1 Quote
BigRedX Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I think I either: own, have owned, or would like to own, every bass featured in this thread except the Bongo. I've tried one on several occasional and have always been underwhelmed by both the playability and sound, especially when you consider the price, and the fact that's it is essentially a mass-produced instrument. Stub Mandrel Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 I know this is highly subjective, but I saw two of these in the flesh today. Vox Starstream, seems to take all its style cues from a Musicman Bongo, but manages to look even stranger. It's the stumpy little legs that make it look comical instead of just ill-conceived. 2 1 Quote

I can see the potential allure of that, but the button legs are just stupid. Unfortunately, the headstock shaping looks like an afterthought and looks like a lazy effort. Definitely potential for a little customising to make it aesthetically better. Quote
