Just heard bass player Alan Lancaster, one of the original members of Status Quo has passed away at age 72 due to MS, fantastic rock bassist, singer and songwriter, he was a big part of my teenage years when seeing QUO live many times with my mates, RIP Alan :(

Just now, Paul S said:

RIP Big Al.  'Let it ROLL baby roll'.  He baled out before they sold out - kudos.

or maybe they sold out because he wasn't around to stop it, he refused to do Margarita Time on TOTP's because he hated it so much, they were never the same when he left

Aw man.

Loved the guy, big part of my listening growing up. Always came across as a honest guy in interviews. He did look frail when the frantic 4 got together.

RIP

Such a sad day! He was a solid and yet a much underrated bass player.

I was really shocked to see how frail he was when they did the Frantic Four reunion shows.

Part of my introduction to music...

Down the Dustpipe Golden Hour LP and then remember getting If You Can't Stand The Heat on Cassette, playing it on a little mono portable till the batteries went flat and the tape ram slow in the nack of my Mums Mk1 Escort... Holiday on the Isle of Wight.

Down Down, Deeper and Down... Too Soon?

Gonna have some Fort Five Hundred Times, and remember a great live version of Rain from some rock compo, Axe Attack or Metal for Muthers 80s thing!

And as already mentioned always came across as such a genuine and gentle fella...

Very sad, a real hero of mine. Played along to his bass lines for hours when I was a kid. Nobody made a Mustang sound like he did. The 1974 album Quo is considered “the” Lancaster album - will be listening later today.

He looked better, as did Rick, when they did the second round of Frantic Four gigs but I believe that he had to superglue the plectrum to his fingers so it didn't slip out of his fingers.

I had the pleasure of being able to play one of my favourite Quo songs a few years ago while depping with a rock band - Big Fat Mamma, so here it is complete with Travis Bean Bass

It was John Taylor who inspired me to play bass ( the Reflex official vid totally sold it to me ) , but it was Alan Lancaster who allowed me to play along with my brothers record collection when playing to records was the only way to learn .

RIP  Alan .

Sad to hear, though I knew he hadnt been well for some time. As others have said somewhat underrated and they were never quite the same without that rhythm section of Coghlan and AL. RIP

Was never a huge Quo fan but I played a lot of AL's lines in my first little school bands, and The Quo were the first band I ever saw in a stadium - Wembley, 1979.

RIP Mr Lancaster.

Its always sad when a brother-in-bass passes on to Valhalla, but especially so when its one from such a hard driving band.
