String shortages?

I don't get through many strings, but if appears that several of the d'addario strings are widely out of stock. Is there some issue or is it just coincidence?

This is all related to the materials and shipping issues caused by COVID. 
 

Music stores here in NYC are short on everything; strings, accessories, instruments….  There are long wait times for orders as well.

There's a lot of disruption to supply chains for many things, especially more specialist stuff. Most of the hiatus is Covid related one way or another

I phoned around about 20 shops across the UK looking for Elixir 40-95s, ended up finally finding a single set behind the counter of a small music shop.

Northwest Guitars today said their suppliers have said prices are going up on D'Addario and Seymour Duncan products from the 5th and several US suppliers I know of have doubled their prices in the car parts market, even with the slight bounce in the £ that is hard to explain to customers here in UK who expect everything for nothing; sign of things to come perhaps globally

Working in construction I can confirm this is because of a huge surge in demand around the world for steel (along with certain polymers and timber) which happened once major economies like China and US started to return to normality, kinda. Prices for steel are going through the roof. Then there is the problem of containers all over the world being dislocated. When Covid hit and shipping just stopped, empty containers have been left at import destinations rather than going back to big ports in  China. In my industry we're short of loads of products not just steel and timber. So if you've bought a new house off-plan and it's been left part finished, it's because wev'e gone from a just-in time delivery system to lead times of up to 3 months.

I'm waiting to get a new guitar but back in July all the stores I tried said they weren't  expecting deliveries till October.

We're struggling to get steel, stainless steel and copper at work because of materials shortages. According to one steel supplier, its near impossible to get anything from the big stockholders in Europe now.

We're getting loads of orders but can't make anything.

Because some of the biggest steel producers are in Texas, and were badly affected by last winters floods and blizzards, either directly indirectly via damage to the power grid.  Many of them still aren't producing anywhere jear xapscity.

 

Texas alone accounts for more steel production than all the EU countroes combined (EU countries account for about 7%) so this has hit the world market hard. Nucor alone produce 22 million tonnes a year and are only now starting to get back towards normal capacity.

 

Demand locally in the UK is massively up with stuff like HS2, and around the world with things like massive building projects in China and the rapod expansion of their navy .  As a result the people in the middle suffer shortages, and people who aren't buying steel in massive quantities and thus spending massive sums are having trouble obtaining it.

 

It has little, directly at least, to do with the B word.

Not much of our structural steel comes from the US because they don't make British sections. Most of our structural sections come from China via Europe.

I'm glad I read this thread as I've just gone over to my parts box and have no new sets of strings and a really busy spell coming up. New D'addario EXL165TP pack ordered
