Fishfacefour
Hi everyone, Tentatively starting something with a guitarist for a fusion trio. Just looking for some good pieces to try that might work well on bass, guitar and drums. So far were looking at Chromazone by Mike stern, some Billy Cobham tunes, kumquat kids by Eddie Henderson, slugbug by Mark lettieri. I'm not a huge fusion nerd but having fun exploring. Any other suggestions from the great basschat hive mind?
Mykesbass
Al di Meola - try the albums Elegant Gypsy and Splendido Hotel.

We used to play several of his tunes in my old fusion trio a few years back. Check out some John Scofield tunes too, maybe some Brand X as well.

Fishfacefour
Thanks! That's already plenty to explore this week.
peteb
Try this if you ant some fusion with a rock element to it

Doctor J
Give Ohm a go, great band. Extraction by Howe, Wooten and Chambers will challenge you, but is quality No talk of fusion is complete without Mahavishnu Orchestra. Although they were a five-piece, I think there are songs which could be adapted for a trio

Excellent, my previous jazz/fusion band used to do Chromazone. You've got this right? toneknob
You could probably give Stratus a go, maybe some Chick Corea Electrik Band (we used to do Space), The Chicken - here's a 7/8 version for trio

It's so great to be able to find these things as part of this community.
Jakester
Gotta be Stratus! Oh, and of course School Days too. We also used to do Contusion by Stevie Wonder too. Edited October 4, 2021 by Jakester
Fishfacefour
Aah, I woke up with Contusion in my head this morning and I couldn't remember the title! Thanks for that! Edited October 4, 2021 by Fishfacefour Typo
yorks5stringer
Here's one of my faves that I used to do, not sure how you categorise Scofield's playing?
StickyDBRmf
(Scofield is a monster) My personal preferences are (is) fusion before fusion was called fusion... And the The Canterbury Scene (British). Examples: Gong, National Health, Hatfield & The North,... The quirkier stuff, but with great playing. And for me, again, it was guys that were recording that my band-mates would say, "Hey, this sounds like you."... ...Percy Jones & Jah Wobble. lowdown
I know there are keys in this tune but, it works great as a Guitar Trio blow.
Raslee
Perhaps a bit of Wayne Krantz ?

Loud Jazz is probably a better description than Fusion, but we could say Jazz Rock too. Crawford13
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tribal Tech yet. Gary Willis is a monster and the rest of the band are top notch too.
Bilbo
I loved the first two TT albums but lost interest after that. Too 'jammy' after that for my tastes. Willis is a monster, though. Edited October 9, 2021 by Bilbo
Mikey D
A quick collection of fusion(ish) tunes ive been a fan of playing over the years. Some more classic fusion and some newer.
