This would be a starting point; I often use it as a 'baseline' bass line, as it's so darned easy and simple ... 4Front Bass Vst ... For splendid ones, I'm afraid some monies have to be disbursed; Spectrasonics 'Trilian' comes high on my list, but we're up in the 200€ stratospheres (it's worth it...) ... Spectrasonics Trilian ... Toontrack's EZBass does what it says on the tin, too, at 150€ ... Toontrack EZBass ... Ah, but 'Free...', you said..? OK, AmpleSound offer this one from their excellent range ... Amplesound Bass P-Lite ... There, that'll keep you busy for an hour or so...

Mcgiver69
Do you need a bass amp sim or just a bass instrument? If you need a bass amp sim then you can use this one. https://lostin70s.com/plugins/BassDeluxe
skankdelvar
Ignite SHB freebie amp sim here: https://plugins4free.com/plugin/1132/ Some free bass amp sims don't include a cabinet simulator so you may need a cab loader and some cab sims. Free cab loader here: https://plugins4free.com/plugin/1790/ Some OK free bass cab sims here - use the link 'Download the bass IR pack': https://shift-line.com/irpackbass
NancyJohnson
The TSE BOD VST is quite excellent should you need something to emulate a Sansamp BDDI and it's free. My last couple of projects were a mix of this and Sansamps; with the BOD, the only thing that I didn't particularly like was recording with a clean tone, but it all turned OK in the end. Mcgiver69
Bass Preamp by Ronald Passion is great too but unfortunately it's 32 bits only, if your DAW can handle 32 bits plugins then download it here. https://plugins4free.com/plugin/2171/ Here's another favourite of mine, unfortunately 32 bits too but works very well. https://plugins4free.com/plugin/2255/ Here's the link to the B.O.D https://plugins4free.com/plugin/1321/ And here's a link to Tonelib, this is the last free version they released before going comercial. It has tons of guitar amps and effects and a very nice Ampeg SVT with a couple of cabs. https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3003/ Hope you find something you like and can use.
