I was talking to @Andyjr1515 while he was filing the aforementioned nut, and afterwards I suddenly realised that his feeler gauge blade on the fretboard would protect it from scratches. This would also be a solution to the problem I have filing down excess superglue on a repair to the finish on one of my basses - so thank you Andy. David It is also so that I don't inadvertently cut the nut too low. The different materials used on nuts file at markedly different rates and on some it is ever so easy to go that tenth of a mm too deep...which is a challenge if it happens. And so I initially file the front edge down to the feeler - which is a teeny bit thicker than my target slot depth - and then do a few final passes without the feeler in place to finish off the break angle and also take the front edge down a smidgen more and to its final depth. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I guessed its main purpose by the unblemished state it was in - a tool used for its purpose and treated with respect. My feeler gauges became redundant as soon as I earned enough to pay someone else to service my car, so I'm thinking of them as thin, sacrificial, toughened steel. Then sat unused until I did a complete setup on the bass 2 years ago. The bass is due another one, but I can't recall what I actually used the guages for. The action's low, but not that low.
