Stub Mandrel Posted October 10, 2022 Posted October 10, 2022 The lovely (I may be biased) Ms. Stubette has asked me to say: "thank you for making me feel welcome, lovely food and a very interesting day, thank you". I think she enjoyed your company folks 😊 5 Quote

Mottlefeeder Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 One of the nice things about talking to other players and makers is what you learn without realising at the time. I was talking to @Andyjr1515 while he was filing the aforementioned nut, and afterwards I suddenly realised that his feeler gauge blade on the fretboard would protect it from scratches. This would also be a solution to the problem I have filing down excess superglue on a repair to the finish on one of my basses - so thank you Andy. David 2 Quote

Just checked all pic's and haven't got one. It belongs to JohnDaBass and I'm sure he'll post a pic on here if we ask nicely - I've pinged him a PM. 1 Quote

David It is also so that I don't inadvertently cut the nut too low. The different materials used on nuts file at markedly different rates and on some it is ever so easy to go that tenth of a mm too deep...which is a challenge if it happens. And so I initially file the front edge down to the feeler - which is a teeny bit thicker than my target slot depth - and then do a few final passes without the feeler in place to finish off the break angle and also take the front edge down a smidgen more and to its final depth. 2 Quote

I guessed its main purpose by the unblemished state it was in - a tool used for its purpose and treated with respect. My feeler gauges became redundant as soon as I earned enough to pay someone else to service my car, so I'm thinking of them as thin, sacrificial, toughened steel. David 1 Quote
Richard R Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 I have a set of feeler gauges last used to set the points on VW polo in winter 1991. Then sat unused until I did a complete setup on the bass 2 years ago. The bass is due another one, but I can't recall what I actually used the guages for. The action's low, but not that low. Quote
