thebrig Posted October 19, 2021 Posted October 19, 2021 (edited) Can anyone recommend a decent pair headphones for practise at home? I'm looking for something that can handle the bass well, but also be detailed enough to make the backing tracks I play along with sound half decent as well. I would prefer the cable to be detachable, but its not necessarily a deal breaker. Up to £150 is my budget. Edited October 19, 2021 by thebrig Quote
casapete Posted October 19, 2021 Posted October 19, 2021 I’ll kick it off with a budget option - Sennheiser HD201’s. Around £30 and a lot better than they should be. I hate headphones generally, but have found these pretty good for using at home with a small Allen & Heath mixer. Comfy to wear and sound fine. Anyway, am sure there’ll soon be more exotic suggestions below. Cheers. Quote

Ed_S Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro are my personal favourites for bass practice and tracking. I also use AKG K702 for mastering and they’re not quite as good for bass, though very light and comfy. 1 Quote
GaryTheBassMan Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I mainly use my Beyer DT550 which can be picked up in that budget! Great sounding headphones and super comfortable! (Even for my giant ears) Quote
thebigyin Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Been on a low wage anything around the £30 to £50 range does me, i practice with headphones all the time these days. Quote
gt4ever Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I use my old set of senheiser hd25’s that I’ve had for close to 20 years and still going strong. 1 Quote
Marvin Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I've got some AKG K72 headphones. About £35. Decent sound and quite robust. Others I've bought, the bass just crucifies them. 1 Quote
Boodang Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I've been using the Samson SR850. Not that expensive and very good. Use for bass and electronic drum practice. 1 Quote
SumOne Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 The ones I use depend on how much extenal noise there is as I like to avoid having to turn up loud to properly hear it: Sennheiser HD-25. Great at blocking out external noise but are quite uncomfortable for long sessions, quite a bass heavy sound. Audio Technica ATH-M50X. Block out some external noise and are in-between in terms of comfort, clearer sounding than the HD-25 but still quite heavy on the bass. Sennheiser HD 598SR. Open back and let in almost all external noise so only really work if you're playing in a quiet room but are comfortable for long sessions and have an 'open' sound rather than feeling you have speakers clamped to your ears, less bass heavy than the other two. PaulThePlug Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 (edited) Fair amount of love for the Sennheiser HD206 on here (Poss a replacement for the 201) Use mine with my Zoom B1on and also my MP3 player... 3m lead lots of room, can work from the floor when standing. Thread a few months back... Edited October 20, 2021 by PaulThePlug Quote
thebrig Posted October 20, 2021 Author Posted October 20, 2021 Thanks for all the recommendations and advice folks, I will research them all Quote
benh Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Superlux HD-681 is what I use - cheap as chips and never let me down. Use them all the time with Zoom B1 Four pedal, as well as general music - great for both. 1 Quote
Guest Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Audio Technica MTH-M50X. One of the best all round headphones at any price for music practice and productuon, and well in budget at about £120. However, something the Sennheiser HD206 is 90% as good for 35% of the price, so there's a lot of scope for something very decent for less cash. Quote
Mickyk Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 If you're on a budget, these are spot on for the price cant go wrong. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MQSFW9R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Quote
StickyDBRmf Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Best bet is record your bass on something, go to a shop where you can "A,B,C,D'em" and make your choice. I wound up w/ Sony MDR 7506's ($99US). Quote

Just received this too which may be of interest to the OP. https://www.musicradar.com/news/the-best-studio-headphones-top-headphones-for-music-production?utm_source=SmartBrief&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=0205D92E-E67C-43E4-B0CF-F6FEA0D1AF4F&utm_content=F3C73264-40D7-4C2A-A008-B454D86A5023&utm_term=9116cb7c-8b54-4dcc-9c6a-b6120f003be7 Quote

i.clarke Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Everyone’s ears/setup are different but for me it sennheiser HD280 pro’s every time ... great for recording with too. 1 Quote
CookPassBabtridge Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 Having had a quick scan i'm surprised no-one has mentioned Phil Jones Bass H-850s. Designed specifically for bassists. The one critique I'd have is that they do feel ever so slightly flimsy, but they're a snip at Bass Direct for £69. Quote
Andermtc Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 Another option at the lower cost are the new ones from Meters/Ashdown. I haven’t tried these, but do have a pair of their OV-1s and the Level-Up! gaming ones for work meetings. Sound is great on both. https://www.metersmusic.com/novu-1 Quote
Muzz Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 +1 for the Beyer DT770Pros...with the addition of the velour earpiece covers, natch... 🙂 Quote
JPJ Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) Another vote for the Beyer DT770’s here. A big plus with the Beyer’s is the availability of spares. I’ve just changed the ear cushions on mine, with most other brands I’d have been shopping for a new headphones. Edited October 28, 2021 by JPJ Quote
