Recently acquired late 70’s / early 80’s Hohner Jazz type bass

Good points…

bass is in a decent condition for its age

Electrics work as they should and it does sound fantastic

Pickups appear to be original although I’m not knowledgable enough to be able to comment on the rest of the electronics

Bass feels solid and very well put together

Points to note…

the bass has been modded at some point in its life to accept through body stringing, the mod has been done to a high standard and is tidy enough

Not so good points…

the truss rod nut has been a little chewed and is above my skill set to get it moving again

Will need some fret work, given the lack of truss rod movement the bass plays fine but does have a fair amount of buzz between 1st and 3rd frets, not much past that but I’m not sure if that’s to do with the current high action or high / low frets

As much as I like this bass I just can’t gel with the neck that feels, to me, like a tree trunk in comparison to my Ibanez’s

would make a decent instrument for someone with the time & skills to get the truss rod working and fret work done or you could throw another neck on it and away you go

photos show the only marks / dings I could find

I did email Hohner themselves (as well as ask the basschat massive for their thoughts in a separate thread) to see if I could get any solid information on this bass as what I’ve seen on the internet seems to be a bit sketchy (please see attached image for what they COULD tell me)

Happy to entertain any offers or trades, not looking for anything in particular so try me with whatever you have, would add cash for anything that tickles my fancy, musicman / OLP or Ibanez soundgear type things would be of particular interest

Not 100% on what these are worth in this condition so If I’ve over priced it please do send me a message and I’ll adjust accordingly

£60 posted in the UK, collection from Maldon, Essex or meet up nearby is welcome. £50 and a cuppa if you collect, £55 and a Ginsters if you don’t want to travel that far

still accepting any offers / trades / swaps

Well well.  I have a neck which would fit this, I think.  Given the shape, I'm pretty sure it's a Hohner, but the branding has been removed.  Truss rod was good last time I checked.

Edit:  On closer exam, I'm pretty sure it is not a Hohner.  The shape is close but not exact; it could probably be reshaped to be a good match.

@Brother Jones thanks for the input, I’m always happy to be corrected on any misinformation I have posted, I was/still am to a certain extent confident that the through stringing on this bass is an aftermarket mod, if I may point you towards these threads then hopefully you can see why…

@alyctes it’s yours if you want it ha ha

I had one of these back in the mid to late 80's - bought it after selling a Kay P bass that weighed a ton. I have good memories of it - the only issue if I remember right was with the bridge. The ball end of the string is retained through a keyhole slot in the bottom of the bridge plate. The problem with mine was that the ball ends didn't fit through the saddles so changing strings was a real pain. I suspect that is the reason this one might have been converted to through body stringing!!

I've always wondered how strings were anchored on those old bridges, my curiosity is now satisfied!

Cool looking bass btw OP.

Having owned one of these new in the mid 80s, I'm about 90% sure that the through-body stringing is original.

My brother has mine, bought new, and it has keyhole slots in the bridge for the string ends, giving the appearance of through stringing from the front.

In the pic above you can just see the recess is unvarnished.

The neck I have is not a Hohner.  It's fairly close, headstock shape-wise, and could probably be reshaped into a good likeness, but authentic it ain't.

@lemmywinks he’s been trying to sell that for a looonng time, it’s for sale on several sites at different prices albeit around the same mark, I might be wrong but I suspect his pricing is a little…optimistic

best of luck to him all the same though
